The purpose of the Licensed Practical Nurse position is to provide assistance to the MCSO Registered Nurse and to work independently for health and safety issues.  This position coordinates annual TB skin testing, monitors employee exposure incidents, maintains electronic/paper medical records and administers inoculations per standing orders.  MCSO is mandated by Arizona Revised Statutes and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) to provide employer-based medical services to its employees, including assessments, treatments, exposure incident records, reports and follow-ups.

Minimum education and/or experience:
Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing and a valid unrestricted license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (or issued by another state recognized by the Arizona Board of Nursing as a multi-compact license state). Must have some venipuncture experience.
 
Specialized training, certifications, and/or other special requirements:
Must have a Certification in Basic Life Support and CPR. A valid Arizona driver's license, or the ability to obtain one, is required at time of hire.  The following training will be provided on-the-job: FEMA NIMS – IS 100 and 700, ADP payroll training, OSHA training and PREA training. Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates successfully pass a polygraph examination and an extensive background review.

Working conditions:
This is a 24/7 operation, must be available to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and rotating days off; subject to on-call and call-out; occasionally working around inmates.

Essential Job Tasks_Updated- Maricopa

  • Assists Nursing staff at the MCSO training facility.
  • Applies TB knowledge, assessment skills, and decision making skills to categorize and report active cases, and suspected cases.
  • Updates and maintains employee medical files, electronic employee management system, and databases.
  • Facilitates implementation of policies and procedures as they relate to each facility or practice site.
  • Participates in learning and professional activities to keep personal skills current.
  • Conducts blood draw/testing of a source suspects and/or inmates blood as soon as feasible to determine HIV or HBV infectivity as specified in Code of Federal Regulations and Arizona Revised Statutes.
  • Researches/updates/corrects data in the Jail Management System (JMS) as it relates to source testing reporting.
  • Reviews and follows up on pre-employment medical evaluations.
  • Provides emergency first responder medical services for employees.
  • Be present at the work site such as jail facilities and/or District Offices to perform any/all duties that are scheduled and/or assigned by the Supervisor or Commander.
  • Assists and administers annual TB skin testing and respond to TB exposures as it relates to testing.
  • Updates all related computer and medical records.
  • Ensures follow-up on all cases from start of report to closure, including follow-up on laboratory tests required, other medical tests required, and laboratory reports.
  • Administers medications/immunizations as prescribed.
  • Assists in the maintenance of employee medical records, and OSHA logs.
  • Reports, evaluates, monitors, and follows-up with employee exposures incidents.
  • Educates and train staff on infection control topics.
  • Facilitates ongoing status reports and annual evaluations of the Employee Health Program.
  • Assists in developing training lesson plans for occupational and safety as required by OSHA.
  • When necessary, may supervise, train, and/or advise unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP).
  • Assists in writing protocol for medical issues as required by OSHA to meet health and safety standards.
  • Analyzes and tracks occupational illnesses and injuries for preventative purposes.
  • Participates in all components of infection surveillance and control data; data definitions, auditing, verification, reporting, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Assists with in-depth investigations to prevent transmission of infectious diseases.
  • Performs workplace hazards analysis and relationship to employees' health status.
  • Assists in maintaining an effective evaluation, follow-up, reporting and referral system for all program elements involving occupational safety and health.
  • Participates in case conferences, quality control activities, record review audits, and training in TB related or emergency/disaster preparation or event as requested.
  • Assists other agencies, when needed. Attend quarterly Infection Diseases meetings.
  • Assists with research and recommend actions related to modified/light duty return-to-work program.

Holidays and Leave
Maricopa County observes ten paid holidays per year. Most County employees accrue vacation (starting at three weeks per year for full-time employees) and sick leave (starting at one hour for every 30 hours worked for all employees). Medical, Prescription, Behavioral Health, Dental, Vision, and Flexible Spending Accounts

Disability insurance is available to replace a portion of an employee's salary should they experience a short-term illness or injury.

Retirement
