The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Election Worker Office Assistants to assist in the upcoming June 2018 election.  The Elections Division is a fast-paced environment, especially as elections approach.  This is an excellent opportunity to work with a group of dynamic, well-organized, and highly efficient individuals committed to the democratic process.

We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the temporary, full-time position of Office Assistant to be hired into one of four areas:

  1. Clerical Support
    1. Data entry
    2. Assembling election supplies
    3. Assembling and processing of Vote by Mail ballot packets
    4. Counting ballots
    5. Operating voting equipment
  2. Customer Service
    1. In-person customer service assisting voters to register to vote or cast a ballot
    2. Phone customer service assisting voters with the above needs, finding election material and understanding their voting opportunities
    3. Operating voting equipment
  3. Outreach Services
    1. Demonstrating voting equipment
    2. Registering voters
    3. Presenting information about the upcoming election
    4. Assisting voters to cast a ballot
  4. Voting Equipment
    1. Helping function test voting equipment
    2. Assisting in delivery and pickup of voting equipment at polling places

Several, but not all, Office Assistants require fluency in Spanish, Mandarin and/or Cantonese, Tagalog/Filipino, or Korean.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.
 
Hourly wage: $18.38

Qualifications

Ideal Clerical Support and Customer Service candidates will have a minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services, or computer experience.  Outreach Services candidates will have strong public speaking abilities and are bilingual in at least one of the above listed languages.  Voting Equipment candidates will have attention to detail and be able to lift and carry materials weighing more than 50 pounds.  Office Assistants able to work multiple elections are preferred.  Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These positions may require weekend and evening work assignments.

Critical Skills for all Election Worker Office Assistant positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities, organize and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Application/Examination
