Description

Summer camp begins 6/18/2018 and ends 8/10/2018.

Responsible for those programs assigned to them as well as supervising a group of approximately 10 children. Reports to the Junior Lifeguard Camp supervisor. Junior Lifeguard summer camp activities at the City of Sunny Isles Beach may include, but are not limited to, athletic and sports-related events, arts and crafts, music, life skills and field trips.   Position incumbent teaches the campers the fundamentals of lifeguarding, including skills such as CPR, First Aid, Ocean Safety and rescue techniques.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Assist with the planning, development and implementation of the different activities to include sports, team games and lifeguarding skills for the Junior Lifeguard Program.
  • Assist lifeguard instructor(s) with providing guidance and coaching to the children as necessary.
  • Track the campers' attendance.
  • Administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Assist lifeguard instructor(s) to maintain adequate inventory of program supplies.
  • Ensure supervisor is updated orally, or in writing, on all activities and is kept informed of any related issues.
  • If required, perform maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or cleaning up.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to be creative with activities for the children.
  • Ability to be friendly and courteous at all times when working with the children and staff.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to assistants.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisory staff.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish effective working relationships with children, adults and coworkers.
  • Ability to work prolong hours outdoors.
  • Ability to stand or be physically active for prolong hours.

Minimum Requirements


Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma required.  Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field such as education, recreation or physical education preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience working with children preferably in a lifeguard summer camp environment; or any acceptable combination of education and experience.


License or Certification:

  • CPR and First Aid certification is required, as well as a Lifeguard certification. All these certifications must be obtained before 6/1/2018.
  • Fingerprints and VECHS background check required.
  • Florida Driver's License may be required.


Additional Information:

  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
Must be available to work at least 90% of the camp duration (6/18/2018 – 8/10/2018). 
 
Must also attend mandatory staff meeting orientation on 6/2/2018, parent orientation on 6/6/2018, and may be required to assist week prior to start of camp,  and week after camp ends.

No city paid benefits with the exception of those required by law.
