The Anaheim Convention Center is owned and operated by the City of Anaheim and it is our mission to provide unparalleled service in a world class venue as we hosts over 200 events each year, welcoming approximately 1.1 million visitors annually. The Convention Center seeks a well qualified Part Time Skilled Crafts Worker I to perform a broad range of complex duties utilizing journey-level expertise. The Skilled Crafts Worker II performs a variety of skilled crafts work in such areas as carpentry, plumbing, painting and construction as assigned or identified by requirements of the job or project. Ideal candidates will have experience in both carpentry and plumbing.
 
This is a part-time position usually averaging 20 - 30 hours per week. A minimum number of hours is not guaranteed.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
 
Depending upon assignment, job functions applicable to assign area may include, but are not limited to duties in two (2) or more of the following construction trades: cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting, and sign making.
 
Follow directions accurately and communicate conditions of assigned work orders.
 
Maintain tool shop, tools, equipment, and supplies.
 
May assist other journey level skilled craft personnel in the performance of complex or emergency duties as necessary.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
 
Carpentry:
Build, install, remove, and repair walls, cabinets, shelves, stanchions, A-frames, barricades, shoring, doors, and doorways, fences, bulletins and blackboards.
Set, install and repairs windows; cut and frame access holes.
Install sinks, countertops, dropped ceilings, ceiling tile and paneling.
Lay floor tile.
Repair roofs and perform rough framing work.
Repair and install drywall.
Repair and install locks and door closers.
Repair and maintain a variety of office furniture.
 
Plumbing:
Repair mechanical equipment such as hydraulic hoists, gasoline delivery pumps, filter systems and air-compressor lines.
Install and/or repair water lines, pipes, hot water tanks and heaters, faucet and flush valves, pressure relief valves, pumps, lavatories, gas lines, air-lines, and fire lines.
Inspect and maintain fire sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
Repair plumbing stoppages and broken pipes.
Perform miscellaneous repairs to cement work, tiles, roofs, and floors.
Perform acetylene cutting and arc welding to accomplish metal fabrication, fitting, joining, grinding, and drilling.
Move furniture and other heavy objects.

Painting:
Clean, prime, sandblast, repair, and paint walls and surfaces.
Strip and hang wall coverings.
Dye upholstery.
Strip and refinish furniture, wood, and cement floors.
Match colors and select paint type (water-base, oil-base, or vinyl) as appropriate to the job.
Safely operate commercial sandblasting equipment removing graffiti in public places.
Operate electrostatic spray painting equipment.
Operate atomizing spray equipment.

Qualifications

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:
 
Candidates must have basic and/or beginning level experience to perform a broad range of duties in two (2) or more of the following trades:  cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting, and sign management. Ideal candidates will have experience in both carpentry and plumbing and/or painting

Candidates must have knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, painting;   principles, theories, and standard practices of several maintenance trades as they apply to maintenance and repair of structures, machinery, and equipment.  Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work.  Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and basic computer software.  Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting; safe driving rules and practices; techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform two of  the following eight (8) trades: cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting, and sign making; follow both written and verbal instructions; safely operate a variety of hand tools and automated equipment; accurately analyze and communicate conditions of job assignments; read blue prints; read and write in English; perform basic mathematical calculations; perform duties of the job without causing harm to self or others; operate basic computer/PC and programs to include Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Outlook;  use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.

Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment.

Depending on assignment may be required to work evenings, holidays and weekends.  May be on call 24/7.

RETIREMENT – Anaheim employees become members of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
  
Employees hired prior to or after January  1, 2013, who are an existing CALPERS member or a member of an agency with reciprocity with the City of Anaheim, will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 55 CalPERS retirement benefit formula.  
 
Employees hired after January 1, 2013, who have never been a CALPERS member, or is a member of a retirement system (CalPERS or reciprocal) but has a break in service longer than six (6) months, will be enrolled in the  2% @ 62 CALPERS benefit formula.  
 
Members are eligible for a pension at retirement with five or more years of full – time equivalent service and age 62.
 
Employees hired on or after January 1, 2013, who have never been a CALPERS member, or is a member of a retirement system (CalPERS or reciprocal) but has a break in service longer than six (6) months, will be enrolled in the  2% @ 62 CALPERS benefit formula. 
 
Employees' shall contribute 8% of the employee contribution rate and 4% of the employer contribution, for a total of 12%.

Employees hired after March 31, 1986 pay 1.45% contributions towards the Medicare Plan. The City does not participate in Social Security.
 
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN (457): The City of Anaheim enrolls part–time 20-Hour employees in a Deferred Compensation Plan (457). Employees contribute 7.5% of their earnings (before taxes).
