Under supervision, participates in and/or supervises aquatic activities and assists with swimming lessons at a community pool.

CERTIFICATIONS
Required certifications: Must be submitted to the Human Resources Department at the time of application to participate in this examination process.

WORK SCHEDULE
Aquatics staff must work from June 11, 2018 through August 11, 2018.  Work hours vary (up to 24 hours/week) depending on assignment, including evenings, weekends and holidays. 

MANDATORY TRAINING: June 9, 2018 & June 10, 2018. Employees are required to attend. 

SWIM TEST:  March 24, 2018 & March 25, 2018 (6:00 PM both days).

Essential Functions

  • Supervises the pool and decks of swimming facility
  • Enforces regulations and ensures adherence to water safety rules and practices
  • Effects rescues by responding to participants in danger by performing water rescues and administering first aid
  • Prevents accidents
  • Assists with program activities
  • Participates in pool maintenance; and performs related duties as assigned

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance, such as:

  • Must be at least 15 years of age with the ability to swim 500 yards in 10 minutes, 30 seconds. 
  • Must have the following Red Cross Certifications: Lifeguard training and First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must have the ability to perform pool maintenance tasks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards
  • Maintain, repair, and take inventory of first aid and life saving equipment
  • Possess the skills to administer first aid to victims of accident, injury, or sudden illness
  • Establish compliance with or enforce pool ordinances and rules
  • Effectively work with the public
  • Physical strength and ability to lift up to 75 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 75 lbs
Examination
Those applicants who appear best qualified based on their application, supplemental application and certificates submitted may be invited to participate in further assessment of their qualifications. These assessments may include a timed swim and demonstration of water safety and first aid practices and procedures.

Vacancies
Vacancies occurring in the Human Services and Recreation Department may be filled as a result of this examination process. Candidates may be offered positions with lower stated qualifications than those for which they have applied/qualified based upon operational determinations of the Recreation and Aquatics supervisors.

Special Requirements

Candidates selected will be required to attend mandatory training sessions. All candidates for Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard/Instructor are required to participate in and successfully complete Title 22 First Aid certification after employment. Failure to attend these sessions may be cause for termination.

Candidates are required to successfully complete medical examinations including drug screen and a criminal background live scan screen consistent with current state and federal law.

FLSA - Non Exempt

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
