Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking Summer Recreation Camp Counselors for the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division. These positions will be located at various locations throughout Volusia County, Florida, and will be responsible for supervising children and conducting recreational activities for the County's summer recreational programs.

Summer Program runs from June 4, 2018 through July 27, 2018. 

Illustrative Duties

NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)  
  • Assist in conducting recreational activities and preparation of facilities.
  • Assist in enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Assist in collecting fees and taking registrations for recreational programs.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Supervise children involved in after-school, summer or other recreational programs at county sites and various outside locations to include water parks.
  • May be assigned to other office locations based on operational needs.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

**NOTE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.

Graduation from high school, completion of a GED or equivalent must be completed by June 2, 2018.
 
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old on or before June 2, 2018.

Note:  A social security card is required for payroll purposes. 

School board employees will be required to present a recent pay stub or school ID. 
 
Must pass required background check (fingerprinting and drug screen)

  • Able to supervise children and ensure a safe environment.
  • Able to monitor and respond to events going on at all times. (E.g. inside, outdoor play area, field trips),
  • Able to establish and maintain effective, courteous relationships with children, parents, and co-workers.
  • Able to tactfully enforce rules and regulations.
  • Able to respond appropriately to an emergency situation.
  • Knowledge of recreational field. 
  • Knowledge of activity rules and regulations.
  • Able and willing to go into water with children.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions
  • Able to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational need.

Physical Demands: Use of fingers, hands, good vision, depth perception, hearing, speaking, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing, balancing and stooping.  
Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (e.g. sun, heat, humidity, cold, rain, dust. noise). Exposure to fresh and salt water. 
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional manuals, policies, procedures, instructions, memos, and letters. Ability to write compound sentences relating information, data, details to layman. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions. Ability to speak clearly and concisely; conversant in practices and procedures of discipline
