Basic Function

Under the direct supervision of a Parks Foreman this position operates heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of City parks, trails, play areas and park amenities, etc.
 

Nature & Scope

Safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment as assigned in various Parks Department projects, including work such as new park construction and the repair and renovation of existing parks. Daily contacts include peers, other department personnel, supervisors and citizens.
 
Under direct supervision of the Parks Foreman, incumbent duties include:
 

  1. Equipment operated includes: motor grader, backhoe, dump truck, lift truck, front end loader, track loader, water truck etc. and depending on the project, hand and power tools of varying type.
  2. Additional duties include minor equipment maintenance, repair and cleaning.
  3. Instructs and trains less experienced operators in heavy equipment operations.
  4. Keeps up-to-date on safety rules applicable to equipment operations.
  5. Keeps simple work orders records.
  6. As required, uses specialized surveying equipment during grading and park construction projects.

Required Skills

This position requires: two years experience in operating heavy equipment; reading, writing and math skills at a level needed to understand directions, equipment operating procedures, etc. Skill and knowledge of principals, practices and methods of construction, i.e. surveying/laser leveling equipment, concrete, etc. Physical ability to perform assigned tasks and operate equipment. Also requires a working knowledge of equipment safety rules and regulations. Must pass a criminal background investigation and have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy. A valid TX Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement is required or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
 

Regular full-time employees are assigned to work at least 40 hours per week, and are eligible for the City's benefit package, subject to the conditions and limitations of each program.
