Description of Job


The Social Work/Counselor III provides therapeutic interventions, including casework, individual, family and group treatment to severely emotionally disturbed and cognitively impaired patients and their families.  This position also performs assessments and disposition planning, interagency communication with residential care facilities, social services, community mental centers, etc. to ensure continue appropriate level of services following discharge.  Provide training and consultation to other professional staff.  

Examples of Essential and Important Duties: 

  • Complete psychosocial assessments by interviewing, collaborating, analyzing, and assimilating social histories to generate a clinical summary and treatment recommendations.  
  • Coordinate discharge planning and provide case management by being a liaison between community agencies, social services, court system, jails, probation, attorneys, group homes, individuals and families, etc.  and CMHIP
  • Research and facilitate access to benefits, implement placements and establish community resources that prevent or minimize risk factors for patient and family
  • Participate in the direction and formulation of treatment plans and reviews
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment team by recommending and designing treatment interventions
  • Assess patient and family education needs and identify readiness to learn, motivation, strengths and barriers to the learning process
  • Provide ongoing psycho/social education that is relevant to the individual, social, environmental factors, medical regimen, to enhance mental health growth and stability 
  • Educate patient and family regarding symptoms of their disorders, symptom management, risk factors, relapse prevention and level o care needs
  • Provide individual, family and group therapy, and system interventions utilizing social work theoretical framework and methods with consideration of ethnic, cultural, religious, and sexual diversity
  • Produce written documentation of all patient assessment, treatment, therapy, education, interaction and activities
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
  • Knowledge of casework methods, techniques, and their applications to work problems
  • Knowledge of the principles of human growth and behavior, basic sociological and psychological treatment and therapy practices
  • Knowledge of interviewing skills and techniques
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to use interviewing skills and techniques effectively
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions 
Work Environment:  
 
  • This position requires working with and managing emotionally disturbed youth and adult psychiatric patients, and patients with alcohol and substance abuse addictions.
  • This position requires working in unlocked and locked units with potentially dangerous patients.  
  • This position requires you work with assaultive behaviors and the ability to manage patients who display these types of behaviors.   All candidates must successfully complete the physical, written, and oral components of mandatory orientation.
  • This position(s) require that work in various divisions to include Institute of Forensic Psychiatry (IFP), Geriatric Adult and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (GAAPS).

Minimum Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, all applicants must possess the following:

Current and valid licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

~AND~

At lease one (1) year of professional experience as a LCSW. Part-time experience will be prorated

Substitutions

None - all requirements outlined above must be met in order to qualify for this position

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Clinical experience in an inpatient setting and/or working with patients with mental illness and physical and/or sexually aggressive behavior 
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, Dialectical and Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Recovery related treatment
  • Experience working with the Care and Treatment for Persons with Mental Illness rules and regulations CRS 27-65 et seq.

 Conditions of Employment:

  • A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges or convictions, it is your responsibility to provide the CDHS Background Unit with an official disposition of any charges.  Additionally, you will be required take a drug screen. 
  • A Tuberculosis Test (TB) will be required upon hire.
  • This position requires some travel

Selection Process

The selection process will consist primarily of a review of applications against the minimum and preferred qualifications of this position.
