Overall Job Objective

Under the direction of the Aquatics Safety Coordinator, the Deck Supervisor manages the aquatic facility operations including supervision of lifeguards and swim instructors, assists with in-service trainings, minor pump room operations, water chemistry testing, plans, develops, coordinates and leads city-wide aquatic activities including teaching and supervising aquatic programs, office networking /schedule design, overall safety of all pool activities, implementing and conducting evaluation and training of staff, aquatics programs, and performing other departmental activities as required. The employee is directly responsible for communication to the public regarding the success of all aquatics programs and safety activities.  

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/ PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:
 1.  Provide excellent member service by exceeding member and guest expectations
 2. Engage in active listening with members and staff in order to build strong relationships,
 understand individual goals and interest, and take the initiative to assist the achievement of these goals.
3. Responsible for supervising (in consultation with the Management Team) of lifeguards and instructors.
4. In conjunction with the Aquatics Safety Coordinator, oversee weekly quick checks, guard drills, manikin drops, and completing required daily documentation.
5.  Be readily available to Lifeguard and teach swim lessons as needed. 
6. Be available to assist with safety and aquatic program questions from members, and staff.
7. All opening and closing shift duties are being completed daily.

Duties & Responsibilities

• The Deck Supervisor will always maintain the highest level of skills, portray a professional attitude at all times, be proactive and be a role model for lifeguards.
• The Deck Supervisor will lead by example and will help build a solid lifeguard team through evaluation, on-the spot coaching opportunities, training, and proper supervision.
• The Deck Supervisor is expected to work closely with the Aquatic management team in coordinating Quick Checks, Lifeguard drills, manikin drops, in-services, maintaining log sheets, capacity counts, and assisting with scheduling.
• The Deck Supervisor is responsible for dealing with immediate equipment, employee and patron situations and notifies aquatic management accordingly.
• Takes proper safety precautions, anticipants unsafe circumstances, acts accordingly to prevent accidents and injuries.  
• Make sure lifeguards are actively scanning, rotating and breaking on time. Lifeguard stations are in the proper locations based on activity in the pool(s).
• Enforces rules, regulations and policies set forth by the City of Boulder, Aquatics Department. 
• Checks pool chemistry adjusts chemical levels as needed, changes hair pots, backwashes pools and performs general upkeep and cleaning in pool area(s).
• Conducting regular hourly rounds including capacity counts and locker room safety checks.
• In the case of an emergency, the Deck Supervisor leads, directs, controls the situation, and fills out the proper documentation (incident/accident/rescue reports).
• The Deck Supervisor is responsible for opening and closing operations and regulates the behavior of patrons and lifeguards according to the City of Boulder Aquatic policies and the policies.
• Development of lifeguard deck rotational system for monitoring the pools and all other pool deck operations.
• Assists with ensuring all staff certifications are current and readily available for review.
• Maintain First Aid Kits, AED's, Emergency "Go Bags" and all required safety equipment is in proper locations, readily accessible, and in good working condition. 
•Performs daily safety inspections of pools and equipment to reduce hazards and to provide maximum safety to the patrons.
• Communicates any pump room maintenance issues, staff issues, patron issues, and general concerns with the management team in a timely manner. Maintains proper pool chemical balance.
• Works as part of a team, attends trainings, orientations, and staff meetings consistently.
• The Deck Supervisor may also be asked to perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
•    Prior Supervision of Lifeguards and Customer Service experience
•    Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make proper judgments into overall patron safety
•    Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal & leadership skills, including conflict resolution 
•    Applicants must demonstrate proficient lifeguard and swim instructor skills, have a friendly demeanor, outgoing, and capable of working with direct and indirect supervision  

Licenses/Certifications
•    American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and ability to maintain and pass all certification components
•    American Red Cross Swim Instructor (WSI) preferred
•    American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) preferred
•    NSPF Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) preferred
