Description

The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department offers various outdoor education summer camps for youth, including the Trekkers Camp, which is an off-site adventure camp.  Trekkers is a car-camping trip designed to provide an opportunity for youth to safely experience the outdoors while gaining a clear understanding of wilderness preservation. It is a 5-day, 4-night program for participants entering grades 6-9. Trekkers' trips include outdoor recreation, nature education, teambuilding activities, hiking and swimming. Trips are taken to locations National and State Parks such as Yosemite and the California Coastline.

Candidates must be available 100+ hours per week for the weeks of July 9-13, July 23-27, and August 6-10, 2018. Trip planning begins in May and June.  Mandatory training is scheduled between June 2 - 8, 2018.
 

Examples of Duties

Duties: Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Recreation Leader positions assist in the implementation of daily operations for Trekkers Camp.
 
Typical Responsibilities:

  • Be a positive role model to elementary school-aged children
  • Assist in meal planning, trip logistics and activity preparation for each trip
  • Initiate and lead activities including group cooking, camp set-up and clean-up, team building, hikes, nature education and wilderness preservation
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of campers, equipment and campsites
  • Keep work environments clean and organized, follow the "leave no trace" principles
  • Conduct pre-trip meetings to thoroughly prepare campers and parents of the expectations and preparations for the trips
  • Communicate with parents regarding camper behavior, injuries and other relevant camp information
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other City staff
  • Renders first aid as necessary
  • Attends weekly staff meetings as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have education equivalent to completion of high school
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR before the start of programs
  • Extensive outdoor experience which preferably includes experience as a trip leader or a camp counselor (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of nature study, arts and crafts, and outdoor recreation skills
  • Knowledge of best practices in youth development, including behavior management and positive role modeling
  • Ability to demonstrate strong skills in leadership and team building
  • Ability to provide strong internal and external customer service
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, children, camp staff, and other City employees
  • Ability to display good judgment, problem solving and critical thinking skills
 
Physical/Sensory Requirements:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with others; visual acuity to read, view a computer terminal, and make observations. Work is done mainly outdoors, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, and pollens. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Potential hazards from proximity to moving vehicles.
 

Supplemental Information

Wages:                 $12.00/hr and $11.00/hr nightly rate* Community Service Specialist II
