Job Description

To perform maintenance and repair work on vehicles and mechanical equipment serviced by the Fleet Services Division.

Essential Duties

Completes and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all light duty and heavy-duty vehicles.
 
Operates a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
 
Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of minor repair and maintenance work.
 
Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
 
Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
 
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment, as needed.
 
Evaluates status of mechanical, hydraulic equipment and vehicles, and performs or assists in scheduled needed repairs.
 
Possesses and maintains a valid driver's license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy.
 
May serve as a member of various employee committees.
 
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations.
 
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent; and,
  2. One (1) year of related experience; or,
  3. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  1. Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics;
  2. Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; grades or quality of materials and equipment;
  3. Working knowledge of hazard and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;
  4. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, material, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance;
  5. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures;
  7. Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion;
  8. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
  10. Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Employee must have a valid Texas Driver's License by date of hire. Must obtain a state vehicle inspector's certification and Texas State CDL Driver's License within six months of hire.
 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
 
Power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle mechanical maintenance and repair work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; safety equipment, as necessary; telephone; mobile or portable radio;  personal computer, including fleet maintenance software.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
