The Custodian performs routine custodial and cleaning tasks at the library.

This is a part-time temporary position located at 202 N Euclid, Gila Bend, AZ 85337. This branch is located in a small rural town 70 miles from downtown Phoenix. The selected candidate will be scheduled to work Monday through Friday mornings for a total of approximately 10 hours each week. The selected candidate may also be asked to provide assistance in setting up and breaking down of library programs that do vary in times so some flexibility is needed.

Minimum education and/or experience:
High school diploma or GED and six (6) months custodial work experience.
 
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Janitorial chemicals and equipment usage, i.e. vacuum cleaner, wet/dry vacuum, floor machines, mop and mop wringer.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard practices and regulations.
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) standard practices and regulations.
  • Arizona safety and health law regulations. 
Skilled in:
  • General computer knowledge and usage.
  • Organizational skills. 
Ability to:
  • Communicate in English effectively orally and in writing.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
Preferred education and/or experience:
Advanced custodial work experience.
 
Working conditions:
Work is performed primarily inside of a library with some outdoor work expected. Position requires direct contact with a variety of cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using normal protective equipment. Must be able to work weekday mornings. Some weekend or evening hours may be required if there is a special program or library event.  Lifting floor to waist – 50 pounds; Lifting waist to shoulder – 50 pounds; Lifting shoulder to overhead – 50 pounds; Carrying a distance of 100 feet – 50 pounds; Pushing/pulling a distance of 200 feet – 50 pounds.

Essential Job Tasks_Updated- Maricopa

  • Ensures the cleanliness of and sanitary conditions of facilities to include the visitor areas, high-traffic, common and employee areas, including restrooms/bathrooms.
  • Works with cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using normal protective equipment and standard safety practices to clean and sanitize the library facility.
  • Cleans, dusts, wipes furniture; sweeps, mops and/or vacuums floors.
  • Empties/cleans wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Empties and cleans ash trays and cigarette urns.
  • Replaces light bulbs; refills restroom dispensers.
  • Strips, cleans, buffs and applies floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, as appropriate.
  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets, as appropriate.
  • Washes walls and equipment.
  • Uses ladder when required in work assignments, utilizing standard safety practices.
  • Operates, maintains and performs minor repairs to power-driven custodial equipment.
  • Keeps and maintains work logs and records.
  • Inventories all cleaning supplies and equipment on a periodic basis.
  • Makes recommendations for purchases to branch manager.
  • Inspects assigned work areas.
  • Performs ad-hoc projects as required such as assisting with setup/break down of facilities for meetings, programs, and events in the library.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.
  • Performs cleaning and related activities such as removing debris from library entryway, sidewalk/stairs and book drop area using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Handles recycling materials.
  • Calls in work orders.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Holidays and Leave
Maricopa County observes ten paid holidays per year. Most County employees accrue vacation (starting at three weeks per year for full-time employees) and sick leave (starting at one hour for every 30 hours worked for all employees). Employees also receive paid leave for other needs such as jury duty, civic duty, and bereavement. 

Medical, Prescription, Behavioral Health, Dental, Vision, and Flexible Spending Accounts
We understand how important health, oral hygiene and vision are to maintaining a good quality of life. We also know our employees want to have the freedom to choose plans to best meet their needs.  Eligible employees may choose from four medical plan options, an HMO, PPO, and two HDHP (High Deductible Health Plans) with a health savings account. Life and Disability Insurance
Because life sometimes takes unexpected turns, the County offers life insurance coverage to help employees and their loved ones in the event of death.  Basic life and basic accidental death & dismemberment insurance equivalent to one times an employee's annual base salary is provided at no cost, with the option for employees to purchase additional coverage including spouse and child life insurance. Disability insurance is available to replace a portion of an employee's salary should they experience a short-term illness or injury.

Retirement
Eligible employees are covered by one of several State-sponsored retirement pension plans, including the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS).  Additionally, there's the option to contribute to a 457b deferred compensation retirement savings plan that provides employees with a variety of investment opportunities.  For those employees who retire from the County and from their retirement system, and have accrued 1,000 or more hours of sick leave, the County makes a $10,000 contribution to a Post-Employment Health Plan set up on their behalf to be used for payment of eligible out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
