Job Description

To perform skilled work in driving and operating a waste collection vehicle with hydraulically operated forks used to pick up and empty dumpster containers.

Essential Duties

Drives a waste collection vehicle over a designated route. Operates the vehicle in a high-risk environment in all weather conditions.
 
Operates the mechanical forks used to hoist and maneuver the dumpster containers, empty the container contents into the body of the vehicle, and return the dumpster container to its prescribed area.
 
Safely transports the load to the Transfer Station, unloads the contents onto the tipping floor, and prepares the vehicle/equipment for continuation of route. Operates the scale to obtain weight of garbage unloaded onto tipping floor.
 
Performs a daily pre-inspection and post-inspection of vehicle and equipment. Performs operator maintenance and cleans vehicle and equipment.
 
Performs waste screening at pickup point and reports uncollectibles and/or hazardous materials to the supervisor. Notifies supervisor of containers that are improperly loaded or need repair.
 
Uses the division's "Tag" system to enforce city ordinances and operating procedures pertaining to municipal solid waste collection and disposal. Gives an information or warning tag for non-conformance to standard.
 
Responds to request for information or complaints from the commercial customers within scope of authority and informs supervisor when needed.
 
Trains and instructs others on the proper operation of the collection vehicle and equipment.
 
Reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately. Completes reports as required.
 
Complies with safety rules, policies, and procedures.  Uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls.
 
Maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.
 
Makes special collections as assigned.
 
Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
 
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license, if required, and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
 
(A)  Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
(B)  One (1) year experience in driving and operating a solid waste collection vehicle; or
(C)   Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
(A)   Knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in solid waste collection activities;
(B)   Skill in operation of waste collection vehicle, listed tools and equipment;
(C)   Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions;
(D)  Ability to work safely;
(E)  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public;
(F)  Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
(G)  Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Must have a valid Texas Class A or B CDL by date of hire. May be required to work nights.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
 
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including mechanical forks, trash compactor, air impact wrench, common hand tools, air jack and safety equipment.
