SHAPE THE FUTURE – WORK in the OFFICE of the PEOPLE

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking full-time seasonal extra-help Election Materials Proofreaders to assist in the upcoming June 2018 Election. This is an excellent nonpartisan opportunity to get involved in the election process!

We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the position of Proofreader. Proofreaders will be hired into one of three areas:
  • English Proofreading
  • Spanish Proofreading
  • Chinese Proofreading

All Proofreaders will be responsible for proofreading and/or translating election materials leading up to established election deadlines. Proofreaders will review, edit, and proofread documents for accuracy, context, readability, and syntax. Proofreaders will work on-site at the Registration & Elections Division at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.
 
Examples of projects and materials needing to be proofread include, but are not limited to:
  • Sample Ballot & Voter Information Pamphlet
  • Official Ballot
  • Accessible Vote by Mail
  • Website content
  • Legal documents
  • Letters, flyers, and other notices to voters
  • Video scripts

The Proofreader is classified as an Office Specialist. The hourly wage for the Election Materials Proofreader - Office Specialist position is $23.33.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Qualifications

Successful candidates for the Proofreader positions will have a Bachelor's degree and at least six-months experience proofreading documents and/or translating in English, Spanish, and/or Chinese.  A background in proofreading, editing, journalism, translating, or other related field is preferred with technical skills that include strong English monolingual skills for the English Proofreading Team), and bilingual skills in English and Spanish/Chinese for the Spanish and Chinese Proofreading Teams.  Competency in the Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Outlook, Skype, and Word, and competency in Adobe PDF are necessary for success.

IDEAL CANDIDATES for the Proofreader positions will have the following:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in proofreading, editing, journalism, translating, literature or other related field.
  • Technical writing certificate or other related certification.

Work Experience:
  • At least one-year experience proofreading documents and/or translating in English, Spanish, or Chinese.
  • Professional background in proofreading, editing, journalism, translating, creative or technical writing, or other related field.

Technical Skills:
  • Competency in additional Microsoft Office Suite applications: OneNote and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint and Adobe InDesign.

Critical Skills for all Election Worker – Office Specialist positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities simultaneously, organize and maintain accurate files and records, type at least 50 words per minute, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These positions may require weekend and evening work assignments. The selected individuals must be available for entire employment period until the completion of their assignment for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election.
