Job Summary

NATURE OF WORK

Under administrative direction with wide latitude for independent judgment, develops policies and procedures in assigned areas of work; performs professional legal work in the prosecution or defense of the most complex and difficult criminal or civil cases; this is a non-covered position; incumbents in this position serve at the pleasure of their respective appointing attorney; the employment relationship of incumbents in this position is "at will", and as such, the employee may be terminated at any time, for any reason, with or without cause; may supervise other attorneys on a routine and/or interim basis.

Example of Work

(Illustrative Only) Works to resolve criminal and civil legal issues, and assures that cases are resolved within office policy guidelines; directs major criminal and civil investigations; advises law enforcement agencies on legal issues of duties, functions and obligations; reviews criminal and civil cases and assignments; identifies policy and compliance issues, and proposes solutions; carries a full caseload of criminal or civil cases; conducts legal research; drafts complaints, briefs, motions and other legal documents; prepares and presents memoranda of law, briefs and other filings and legal documents, as required; develops strategy, arguments and testimony in preparation for presentation of case; monitors and reviews trends in law enforcement and criminal justice, and recommends operational, procedural and policy improvements; screens and assigns cases; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; counsels, trains and coaches attorneys and support personnel; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; provides direction and guidance in legal analysis, strategies and negotiations; establishes trial strategy; participates in meetings with County Officials, local and national law enforcement, judicial, professional and community groups; may assist in developing and reviewing office policies and procedures; may review assigned unit's performance and operations, and review and evaluate performance of professional staff and support staff; regular and reliable attendance is required; performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

Juris Doctorate (JD) degree; AND seven (7) years experience as a practicing attorney AND extensive trial experience in a leading role in complex criminal or civil cases; must be licensed by the Bar to practice law in the State of Arizona, remain active with all Arizona Bar annual requirements, and maintain a clear criminal record; it is expected that a minimum of 70% of workload must be at the Senior Trial Attorney level to maintain classification. Special Requirements: Must submit a Certificate in Good Standing issued by the Disciplinary Clerk of the Supreme Court of Arizona. For Capital Crimes: Must have certification from the Arizona Supreme Court, according to ARS Rule 6.8, Standards for Appointment of Counsel in Capital Crimes; must have 1st Chair trial experience; must possess a valid driver's license.

This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point annual salary. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: County and department policies and procedures; State of Arizona civil and criminal statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, applicable Federal rules and regulations; trial and appellate court processes, protocols and strategies; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases and other research tools; legal case management procedures, ethics and techniques; the principles and protocols for the evidentiary gathering of information, documents, financial records and other data that may be used in court; the principles and practices of supervision and management.

Skill in: Reviewing and assessing legal issues and documents; setting priorities, planning, assigning, training and supervising the work of others; effectively assessing, interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence and other data compiled; trial procedures, negotiation, developing legal strategy, and presenting legal arguments; planning and managing the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records and documentation; verbal and written communication, and exercising judgment and discretion in decision making; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies and other participants in the criminal justice process; operating a personal computer, standard office software and specialized legal software programs.

Southwest Service Administrator (SSA) Mexico PPO Health Plan: SSA is available to employees who are enrolled in YCEBT Medical PPO Plan. The SSA Plan pays 100% of hospital, medical, laboratory and prescription drug benefits, to a maximum of $3,500 per person per calendar year ($7,000 for two or more family members).
