Position Information

Receives intensive classroom and field training in principles, practices, procedures and techniques of police work which prepares the recruit to perform the duties of a police officer including the detection, apprehension and arrest of suspects and use of firearms. Recruits are also required to pass a rigorous fitness testing program. Must be able to work irregular hours, shift and weekend work. Exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions.

After 12 months of satisfactory service as a Metropolitan Police Recruit, recruits are eligible to become a Metropolitan Police Officer I, $5,346 per month (PO-07, Step A), plus $658.67 per month, Standard of Conduct pay.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time application, applicants must meet the following:

  • 20 years of age (21 years of age by graduation from the Police Academy)
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED)
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (Type 3/automobile)
  • US Citizen, US National, Permanent Resident Alien of the US, or Non-Citizen with unrestricted employment authorization.
  • Must be able to meet Federal and State eligibility requirements to possess firearms (no felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence, other violent crimes, or illegal drug sales).

Examination Process

ENTRY LEVEL POLICE EXAMINATION
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be contacted by HPD via email with additional information and instructions to self-schedule for an entrance exam. Applicants who do not currently reside on the island of O'ahu will be contacted for a consolidated testing process and will not be required to self-schedule. The next consolidated testing will be between June - August 2018. Applicants are responsible for all travel and lodging expenses.

HPD will administer exams on a regular basis; once invited to self-schedule, please monitor the registration site for exam dates.

The entrance exam is a timed, multiple choice exam that covers observation and memory, written communication, reading/understanding, and reasoning/analytical ability. HPD will notify applicants of their entrance exam results via email.

If applicants are claiming veteran's preference, you must meet eligibility requirements AND submit a copy of your Form DD-214 at the examination site. Veteran's Preference is applicable ONLY if you pass the entrance examination.

ELIGIBILITY LIST
Applicants who pass the entrance exam will be ranked by their score and be placed on a "live" eligibility list. Your score will be valid for one (1) year. Once HPD is ready to begin processing for a recruit class (usually 3 times per year), the highest ranking applicants will be invited to begin HPD's internal selection process.

HPD's internal selection process will include a Physical Readiness Assessment, Orientation, Online Personal History Statement, Clarification Interview, Psychological Examination/Interview, Polygraph Examination and Medical Examination. For more information on all of the steps, please click here.
