Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA): The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) provides financial and technical assistance through public and private partnerships to create and preserve safe and decent affordable housing

The State Historic Preservation Office is currently seeking an intern to work the Summer  2018 Semester (May through August 2018).

Intern Responsibilities/Projects:

1. Create, verify, and clean-up above-ground GIS information for historic site records

Under direction of SHPO staff, validate spatial and attribute accuracy of existing GIS datasets.  Combine datasets where need be.  Create new data where holes exist.  Maintain a running log of changes made to GIS data.  Present status updates at GIS Team meetings.
  • Student Intern will help with the creation, verification, and clean-up of historic sites data in the MiSHPO database, a new Geographic Information System (GIS) database system
  • Student Intern will be introduced to SHPO's data management policies and processes and help familiarize him/her with key preservation concepts
  • Student Intern will attend and contribute to bi-weekly and intermittent GIS Team planning meetings with SHPO staff
  • Student Intern will also engage in GIS work, assisting in the creation of polygons representing historic districts and surveyed areas

2.  Create, verify, and clean-up data in MiSHPO database system following the conversion of data from the existing Argus database system.
  • Maintain a running log of changes made to information in the database; maintain this log in SharePoint network environment
  • Enter new information from other sources (both paper and electronic files) to fill holes in the database
  • Consult with supervisor and other SHPO staff to resolve information conflicts
  • Conduct research to find solutions when necessary

3.  Assist in cleanup of architectural/historic site survey information.  Analyze and prepare for digitization of records.
  • Under direction of SHPO staff, identify, record, and where possible, correct data problems in the new database
  • Maintain a running log of changes made to data in the database
  • Enter new data from other sources (both paper and electronic files) to fill holes in the database
  • Consult with supervisor and other SHPO staff to resolve data problems
  • Conduct research to find solutions when necessary
  • Present status updates at GIS Team meetings
  • Assist in logging existing reports into the MiSHPO database, indexing reports, and shelving reports
  • Maintain a log of the processing of the reports
  • Extract site information from the reports, creating new or updating existing site records in the database
  • Assist with record keeping that will allow for the preparation of the reports when they are scanned



 

    Required Education and Experience

    To be considered for this internship, applicants must be enrolled in a college or university working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in the following areas of study: Historic Preservation, Architecture, GIS studies, Architectural History, Urban Planning, Geography, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field are preferred.

    Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
