Description

The City of Olathe is actively seeking a Water Production Operator to perform a variety of skilled technical and maintenance related duties in the operation and maintenance of the City's water treatment plant, remote storage facilities, and source water stations. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned treatment plant rounds to inspect, monitor, and document plant operations by reading and interpreting information provided by the SCADA system, meters, gauges, and other instrumentation.
  • Inspect, monitor, and document remote storage and pumping facilities; address or report abnormal conditions.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain all pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment required to maintain appropriate operations; backwash filers and perform membrane chemical cleanings as needed.
  • Monitor and report chemical inventories; safely receive and unload chemical deliveries; transfer day tank chemicals.
  • Maintain, compile, and update plant and remote facilities operations logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities.
  • Collect samples; perform a variety of routine water quality laboratory tests for process control and regulatory compliance; complete associated documentation for sample collection and analyses; work closely with the laboratory on testing requirements.
  • Perform general plant facility maintenance such as cleaning and repairing plant facilities as required.
  • Ability to work weekends, overtime, regular days off, or holidays as assigned or needed.
  • Respond to emergency alarms and calls as required; communicate to management and maintenance staff any areas of concern that could compromise treatment, production of adequate quantities of water, or safety of staff or customers.
  • Monitor remote facilities on SCADA and dispatch persons to check facilities as required.
  • Operate assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with snow removal as required, including operating snow blower and snow plow.
  • Accept a leadership role in developing and implementing the safety culture of the department; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Review chemical MSDS sheets. Must be able to demonstrate proper use of safety equipment, including respirator and participate in required safety training. Correctly wear personal protective equipment for appropriate situations.
  • Utilize a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), X-LIMS laboratory analyses database, and erPortal work order tracking system; learn new software programs as they are introduced.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate flow of water to ensure storage in reservoirs and towers and to maintain adequate distribution system pressures.
  • Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, and customers, etc sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.  Must be able to communicate effectively as well as follow written and oral instructions.

Experience & Education

Experience: One year of experience performing water treatment plant operation and maintenance duties preferred.

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Specialized education in mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, mechanics, hydraulics, computer technology, laboratory, or applied science is desirable. Associates degree preferred.

Licenses and Certificates:  Class I Water Certification from the State of Kansas within 18 months of employment.  Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license.

Must successfully pass a background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug screen.
