Basic Function

The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for instructing swimming lessons in accordance with City and department policies.

Nature & Scope

1.  Instruct swimming lessons according to the Grapevine Swim Program lesson plans.
 
2.  Maintain class rosters and checklists on a daily basis.
 
3.  Present, demonstrate and teach material in one on one and small group situations.
 
4.  Perform general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.
 
5.  Perform administrative and aquatic services required at the facility, including scheduling and teaching swim lessons, supervising group activities and helping with other aquatic programs.
 
6.  Ensure the safety of class participants and supervise participant activities.
 
7.  Effectively interpret and implement the Grapevine Swim Curriculum and guidelines to match those of the department, and exercise good judgment to ensure a safe environment for participants. 
 
8.  Attend all in-service training and continuing education as directed by the Department.
 
9.  Work various shifts, and provide support for other areas of the Parks and Recreation Department as needed.
 
 

Required Skills

1.  Obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent certification recognized and approved by the Aquatic Supervisor, such as, but not limited to BSA, YMCA, JES (Jeff Ellis Swimming), Emler Swim Schools or Starfish Aquatics Institute prior to teaching any lessons.
 
2.  Re-certification may be obtained after being hired for the job but prior to teaching any lessons and must be maintained while employed in the job.
 
3.  Must be able to successfully demonstrate all swimming strokes and deal effectively with the public.
 
4.  Related pool operations or program experience preferred.
 
5.  Swimming instruction experience preferred.
 
6.  Minimum age 16.

Hired to work as the need arises. Work schedule could be up to 40 hours per week, but the duration of employment shall be no more than six (6) months. No City sponsored benefits will be extended to temporary employees. However, all legally mandated benefits will be extended to temporary employees.
