Duties Summary

Independently operates, maintains and repairs the County's water sources, storage and distribution systems equipment, including auxiliary equipment to ensure water quality; makes necessary adjustments to water conditioning processes to meet water quality standards; and performs other related duties as required.

Note:  Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks.  Part-time experience must be pro-rated.  Example:  Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience.  In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited.  Example:  Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of water system maintenance and operational experience including the maintenance of sources, storages, transmission and distribution systems, and two (2) years of experience in the electrical or mechanical field.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license, and the appropriate valid State of Hawaii Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, Grade 1, and Distribution System Operator Certificate, Grade 3, as required of the position.

Knowledge of: methods of operating pumps and related equipment; principles of hydraulics and electricity as applied to the operation of pumping plants; methods and equipment used in testing and repairing mechanical equipment; the practices, tools, materials and equipment used in pipe fitting work; installation, maintenance and repair requirements of water pumping units and meters; grounds, equipment and building maintenance activities; occupational hazards and safety practices involved in working around high pressure water systems, electricity and moving machinery; dealing with the public; general mechanical knowledge.

Ability to: properly use tools and equipment required to install, maintain and repair pumps, valves and related equipment at water facilities; use tools and equipment required in pipe fitting work; read and interpret construction plans, specifications and schematic diagrams; inspects pumps and electric motors to determine need for service, repair or maintenance; estimate time and material requirements; understand and follow oral and written instructions; deal tactfully and effectively with the public; operate electronic equipment and personal computers.
