Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to perform manual labor within the Public Works Utilities division. May be responsible for water and wastewater systems and/or construction projects.

Depending on the assignment may provide emergency response to all Public Works issues after hours which may include but is not limited to all street problems, potholes, trees down, signals, signs, water and sewer issues.

Typical tasks may include:

  • Water main repair
  • Sewer main repair
  • Sewer service repair
  • Operating flushing truck to clean mains
  • Hydro excavation
  • Fire hydrant repair
  • Meter change outs and leak repairs
  • Sewer service calls - cleaning lines for residents and commercial businesses
  • Operating heavy equipment as needed.

The City of Farmers Branch will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come, first serve basis. As soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice after a three business day minimum posting.

Essential Job Functions

Performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks including installations, inspections, repairs and maintenance at assigned locations. Performs special winter work projects.

Operates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs of various equipment including hand and mechanical tools and motorized equipment.

Sets up work zones as appropriate and insures safety procedures and proper use of safety equipment at all times.

Provides general maintenance support to special events.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalency.

One year of experience is preferred.

Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with Tanker endorsement and a good driving record with the ability to maintain while employed or the ability to obtain a class B CDL with Tanker endorsement within six months of employment. 

Must be able to work flexible hours, holidays, and weekends as needed. Subject to "stand by" duty.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

This position normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.

Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Basic ability to recognize meaning of common two or three syllable words and to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or a series of numbers, names, and addresses. Intermediate ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.

Ability to learn geography of City including major streets and landmarks.

Work involves extreme exposure to disagreeable elements, and extreme weather conditions. Involves continuous outside work with frequent exposure to poor weather conditions. Physical demands include frequent lifting of heavy objects weighing 50-75 lbs. Continuous exertion, requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, back or sensory facilities. Sufficient stamina to walk a majority of the workday. Extensive bending, stooping, and climbing.
