Description

This position will act as a non-certified firefighter and performs basic firefighting and life rescue duties, maintains fire equipment, vehicles and fire station in addition participates in training and certification programs.
 

 
The incumbent(s) will act in this Firefighter I position temporarily as they go through training and recruit school. After finishing recruit school an individual can operate as a Firefighter II.  Once the necessary training and certification standards are met through EMT school the incumbent may become either a Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic.


 
 

Examples of Duties

Responds to fire alarms and other life-threatening situations; performs basic fire fighting duties by operating fire apparatus and equipment; performs basic life rescue duties including first aid and CPR; maintains the fire station on assigned shift that includes basic maintenance duties as well as completing a checklist; prepares and completes required reports including an activity and station log and incident report; participates in training and certification classes to obtain required certification status; performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High School or GED equivalent. 

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid Georgia Driver's license.
 
Must meet State Minimum Standards requirements for entry to the Certification Program which include:
  •             Passing a physical exam
  •             Passing written and oral examinations
  •             Passing HCFD Physical Fitness program

Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information

Knowledge of basic fire fighting procedures and practices of Henry County Fire Department; knowledge of mechanical principles and operations of fire rescue equipment and vehicles; knowledge of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; knowledge of the geography of Henry County and the road system; skill in driving, emergency and otherwise; skill in administering first aid and CPR; skill in performing general mechanical maintenance; skill in oral and written communication; skill and dexterity in operating fire vehicles, apparatus, and life rescue equipment including ladders, hoses, pumps and other assigned equipment.

Annual Leave

Annual Leave (vacation) is earned as follows:

  • 0 months – 5 years: 10 days per year
  • 6 years – 15 years: 15 days per year
  • 16 years – 20 years: 20 days per year
  • 21 years and over: 23 days per year

Sick Leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for a total of 12 days per year.

Employees receive nine paid holidays per year.

Insurance benefits are offered to employees working over 32 hours per week.

New employees are eligible for insurance coverage on the first day of the month following one full month of employment.

Retirement is managed by GEBCorp. Employees are required to contribute a percentage of annual salary for the Defined Benefit Program. Also available is an optional 457b Deferred Compensation Program.
