This is a continuous recruitment to fill Detention Officer / Detention Officer I - Extra Help positions as they become available.  Positions will exist with the County of Yolo's Probation department.  "Extra-Help" employees are temporary employees who provide coverage for periods of limited duration and are paid on an hourly basis.  The candidates will be placed at the Detention Officer or Detention Officer I level depending on their qualifications, and at the discretion of the appointing authority.  The salary range for each classification level is as follows:

                 Detention Officer - Extra Help: $35,256.00 - $37,931.92 Annually
                 Detention Officer I - Extra Help: $43,237.79 - $52,547.66 Annually

Employment Standards

Detention Officer
Education:
Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D.

Age: Applicants must be a minimum 20 years of age at time of appointment.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:
1.  Shall not have been convicted of a felony in this State or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this State;

2.   Shall have good moral character;

3.   Must be in good physical condition, medically and psychologically fit to perform the assigned duties.

License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Detention Officer I

Education:  Completion of 30 semester units or 45 quarter units of college with major coursework in the behavioral sciences; or
Experience: One year of full-time experience in a related field supervising, observing, and assessing youth, preferable in a security setting. 

Successful completion of the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction - Standards and Training for Corrections Program is highly desirable but not required for qualification.
 
Age:  At least 20 years of age.

License
Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation. In addition, incumbents must meet the qualifications for the Class B California driver's license when required by the job assignment.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this classification are designated as peace officers in accordance with Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code. As such, the applicant must meet the standards stipulated in Sections 1029-1031.5 of the Government Code, which include the following:

  • Except under special circumstances, shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state. (Section 1029, California Government Code).
  • Shall have good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation. (Section 1031, California Government Code).
  • Through examination by a medical and psychiatric professional, found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of powers of a peace officer. (Section 1031, California Government Code).
  • Be a citizen of the United States. (Section 1031.5, California Government Code).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Within the first year of employment in this classification, incumbents must successfully complete the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction - Standards and Training for Corrections Program,  and thereafter successfully complete required annual certified updated courses.   Candidates may waive all or part of the required training if they enter this class having already completed the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course.  Detention Officers are required to attend training as prescribed by the Department and/or legally mandated for Management of Assaultive Behavior, First Aid/CPR, Chemical Agents, and Firearms.
 
Detention Officers assigned to the Work Program/Transportation Division shall meet the training requirements and quarterly qualifications set forth in the California Penal Code and overseen by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Program for firearms.

An Extra Help Assignment is defined as, employment in an approved classification intended to be less than year-round to cover seasonal peak work loads, emergency or other work loads of limited duration, necessary vacation and sick relief, and other situations involving fluctuating staffing. Extra Help shall apply to both employment and to the person. Extra Help Employees shall not be eligible for sick leave, holidays, vacations, group insurance or other benefits except as required by law. Employees hired as Extra Help can serve continuously or intermittently so long as needed to cover work load, but in no case may the employee work one thousand (1000) hours or more in a fiscal year.
