Description

This position is responsible for directing the work of a construction or maintenance crew, in addition the incumbent will operate heavy and complex equipment. Responsibilities include directing and monitoring work to ensure that it is performed based on work orders, supervisory instructions and established procedures. The employee operates road maintenance and construction equipment on an independent basis or as a member of a crew. Emergency call-back duty is also performed as required.

Examples of Duties

Receives work orders and new projects from Foreman and directs and monitors the work of assigned crew members; operates heavy or complex equipment such as gradall, pan or motor grader in grading roads and right-of-ways, preparing road base surfaces for paving jobs, constructing or maintaining bridges and storm drain systems; assists Foreman in identifying proper grading profiles for construction projects; instructs employees in correct work procedures and work methods; performs daily servicing of assigned vehicles or equipment such as cleaning and checking fluid levels; responds to emergency calls and assists supervisors in determining proper work methods for repairing road, bridge, and storm drain infrastructure; performs the duties of assigned workers and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High School or GED equivalent. 

Two (2) years of experience as an Equipment Operator III. 

Possession of a valid Georgia Commercial Class A driver's license.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information

Knowledge of the Department's standard of operating procedures, work methods and safety rules; knowledge of all phases of construction and maintenance projects in road, storm, etc.; knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy or complex equipment; skill in reading and interpreting as-built drawings and engineering plans; ability to proficiently operate a variety of heavy, complex and moderately heavy equipment; ability to direct the work of others in order to complete projects based on work directives and established procedures; skill in instructing and training crew members on new work methods and procedures.

Annual Leave

Annual Leave (vacation) is earned as follows:

  • 0 months – 5 years: 10 days per year
  • 6 years – 15 years: 15 days per year
  • 16 years – 20 years: 20 days per year
  • 21 years and over: 23 days per year

Sick Leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for a total of 12 days per year.

Employees receive nine paid holidays per year.

Insurance benefits are offered to employees working over 32 hours per week.

New employees are eligible for insurance coverage on the first day of the month following one full month of employment.
