Description

This position is responsible for operating heavy or complex equipment used in paving, construction or maintenance work such as an asphalt distributor, pothole patcher, motor grader, gradall, or asphalt spreader. An employee assigned to this classification may work independently, may work as a member of one crew, or may rotate to different crews based on department projects and current workloads.  

Examples of Duties

May operate a gradall, motor grader, pan or other heavy equipment for grading roads and right-of-ways, cleaning storm drains and pipes, constructing bridges and storm drainage systems; may operate a tack distributor, asphalt distributor or asphalt paver on a paving crew; responds to emergency calls and assists in determining proper work methods for repairing road, bridge and storm drain infrastructure; drives a tractor trailer such as a lowboy in hauling equipment to project work sites; acts as lead operator in the incumbent's absence; assists lead operator in explaining work methods and assignments to other crew members; operates moderately heavy equipment such as a bull dozer, front end loader, roller, tandem axle dump truck or backhoe on a substitution or temporary basis; performs daily servicing of assigned vehicles or equipment such as cleaning and checking fluid levels; performs duties of a laborer in completing projects; performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High school  or GED equivalent.

Two (2) years of experience as an Equipment Operator II.

Possession of a valid Georgia commercial driver's license.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information

Knowledge of all work methods and procedures used on assigned construction or paving crew; knowledge of all phases of construction and maintenance projects in road and infrastructure work; knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy or complex equipment; skill in proficiently operating a variety of heavy, complex and moderately heavy equipment; skill in performing all manual labor tasks on assigned crew; skill in interpreting detailed instructions and carrying them out with minimal instruction; skill in safely and proficiently driving and operating assigned equipment and vehicles.

Annual Leave

Annual Leave (vacation) is earned as follows:

  • 0 months – 5 years: 10 days per year
  • 6 years – 15 years: 15 days per year
  • 16 years – 20 years: 20 days per year
  • 21 years and over: 23 days per year

Sick Leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for a total of 12 days per year.

Employees receive nine paid holidays per year.

Insurance benefits are offered to employees working over 32 hours per week.

New employees are eligible for insurance coverage on the first day of the month following one full month of employment.
