Our mission is to enforce the law, safeguard our community, and enhance its quality of life through the prevention, investigation, and reduction of crime.  The Grand Junction Police Department provides a full range of high quality policing services found in few departments our size including:  a motorcycle unit, K-9s, bomb squad, crime lab, university campus policing, SWAT team, drug task force and other collateral assignments. Based on job performance, many Police Officers reach the top of the pay range within two to three years.

Duties

Patrols assigned district(s) within City limits; responds to radio dispatch calls for service; performs preliminary investigations at scenes; prepares citations and summonses; makes arrests and transports individuals; appears in court to offer testimony relative to the investigation of incidents; prepares a variety of reports and records; offers assistance to citizens.

Qualifications

  • Good physical condition
  • Minimum of 21 years of age, as of date of hire
  • Minimum vision corrected to 20/40 in worst eye and 20/20 in best eye
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid Colorado driver license
  • Good moral character (past criminal activity may be disqualifying – see list)
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays

Supplemental Information

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/ PAY RATES
Certified Officers
New hires who have graduated from a Colorado Police Academy but have less than three years of experience as an Officer start at $27.87 per hour.
Lateral Entry Officers
Officers with a minimum of three years of experience with one department as a Police Officer start at $29.28 per hour.
Out of State Lateral Officers
Starting pay for Officers from out-of-state will be $27.87 per hour until Colorado POST certification is obtained.

Retirement Programs: Mandatory pre-tax employee contributions of 10.65% are matched by the City to provide income during retirement years. Various additional voluntary retirement plans, not employer-matched, are available as another way to save for retirement with or without pre-tax dollars.
Paid Time Off: Employees accrue general leave to be used for vacations, illness and paid holidays. There is no waiting period for new employees to use their PTO once it is accrued. The accrual rate starts at 31 days per year (14.5 shifts for Fire) and increases at every additional 5 years of service up to 16.
