DESCRIPTION

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is seeking an experienced, organized, focused and self-motivated individual to teach Zumba Dance and Exercise classes at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center!

Under supervision, the Zumba and Exercise Instructor I prepares lesson plans, organizes, instructs and or directs classes in Zumba and exercise in weekly, eight – ten week quarters.
 
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all inclusive.
  • Prepares course materials and instructional aids.
  • Organize, instruct, and direct classes in Zumba and/or exercise.
  • Conducts demonstrations and presentations to students.
  • Evaluates student level and ability to develop appropriate lesson plans based on student need.
  • Evaluates class activities to assess class effectiveness.
  • Enforce departmental policies and procedures including health and safety rules.
  • Sets up audiovisual equipment for instructional purposes.
  • Prepares written reports.
  • Substitute for other instructors.
  • Perform other duties as required.

HOURS:
This is a part-time, recurrent, hourly, as needed position. Hours are varied Monday through Saturday, and revolve generally around the class sessions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities required is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year.  Four of the five years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school.  Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.

Ideal Candidate
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Exercise instructors are required to have an exercise certification;
  • Zumba instructors are required to have a Zumba certification;
  • Previous group teaching experience;
  • Strong background and training in the Zumba and/or exercise field;
  • AED/CPR certification is preferred.

Health Insurance (sec. 4.6)
Employee working more than 30 hours per week on a regular basis over 12 months will receive one-party part-time health coverage ($248.84).
 
Deferred Compensation (sec. 4.5)
Employees participating in Plan "B" who reach $1,000 avail themselves to more investment options
 
Holidays (Sec 4.4)
Holiday pay of four (4) hours for Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and Veteran's Day. 
*To be eligible, employee MUST work at least 12 hours during pay period in which holiday falls.
 
Bereavement Leave (sec 4.2)
Three (3) working days without pay (Additional leave without pay for out of state death)
