FUTURE SALARY INCREASE
The Scientific Investigations Division of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists II, who are responsible for collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence at crime scenes, while learning to process evidence including; fingerprints, photographs, and crime scene reconstruction. Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist II also learn to process  Advanced Crime Scene, Gunshot Trajectory, and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.

This is the second trainee level in the series; incumbents work under general supervision, and respond to lower level crime scenes for which they have been qualified, collect evidence from crime scenes and perform a variety of duties, including fingerprinting, photography, crime scene reconstruction, and other technical duties while receiving training in advanced crime scene techniques including bloodstain pattern analysis and gunshot trajectory reconstruction. 

Employees must qualify for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist III within 36 months or be terminated. This is the second trainee level in the series, incumbents do not attain regular status at this level.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
1) Background:  Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
2) Shift:  Applicants must be available for all shifts; incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, or be on call for work, on weekends, holidays, and evenings, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. 
3) License:  A valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance.
4) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation, and the incumbent can expect to work rotating, night, weekend, day, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends. Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists who are on call must be able to report for duty within one hour after being paged.
5) Physical:  Incumbents must be able to climb up and down embankments, and hike short distances over rough terrain, while carrying up to 40 lbs; work in inclement (hot/cold/wet) weather; and be able to work while wearing an Air Purifying Respirator (APR).
6) Medical:  Incumbents must pass a yearly medical exam to verify the ability to wear an APR.
7) Training: This is the second trainee level in the series; incumbents work under general supervision, and respond to lower level crime scenes for which they have been qualified.
 

Minimum Requirements

Option A - Experience: Two (2) years of full-time work experience with a law enforcement organization as a field specialist in either crime scene photography or evidence collection and documentation. 
 
-- OR --

Option B - Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensic or police science, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigationevidence collectionand college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of coursework must be submitted and transcripts must be attached with the application.
 
-- AND –
 
Fifteen (15) months (trainee period) of full-time work experience as a Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist I with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability in:

  • Advanced Crime Scene
  • Gunshot Trajectory
  • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

Selection Process

There will be a competitive evaluation of experience based on a review of the application and supplemental application materials.  It is to your advantage to be complete and thorough in your responses.  

Incumbents in the class of Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist I are eligible for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist  II upon meeting minimum requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report.
