Description

The work of this position involves performing preventative maintenance work, diagnostic and corrective mechanical work on automobiles and diesel trucks. Incumbents may assist senior mechanics in performing related repairs on heavy equipment, fire trucks and other specialized equipment or in performing complex repair work.

Examples of Duties

Determines cause of routine mechanical problems and obtains needed materials and parts to make necessary repairs; performs basic mechanical repairs to the engine system such as vehicle tune-ups, brake jobs, tire balancing, hose and pump replacements, etc.; responds to vehicle road-service calls and makes on-site repairs or arranges to have vehicle towed into Service Shop; checks and refills vehicle fluids; changes fuses; checks tires, and performs other basic servicing work on vehicles; services air conditioning systems in County vehicles; operates brake drum machine, hydraulic tools, and other equipment in performing duties; may drive vehicles in moving them from one location to another for servicing; and performs related work as required.


 

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in automotive and diesel mechanics.

Two (2) years of experience in automotive or diesel engine repairs.

Preferred qualifications:

ASE and/or EVT certification.

Valid Georgia CDL.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

 

Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information

Knowledge of routine mechanical repairs for gasoline and diesel engines; knowledge of engine service manuals; knowledge of Department rules and regulations regarding assigned duties; skill in using computerized diagnostic equipment in conducting repairs; skill in diagnosing common vehicle maintenance and repair problems; skill in using a variety of manual and hydraulic mechanic's tools; and skill in dealing courteously with other County employees and the general public.

Annual Leave

Annual Leave (vacation) is earned as follows:

  • 0 months – 5 years: 10 days per year
  • 6 years – 15 years: 15 days per year
  • 16 years – 20 years: 20 days per year
  • 21 years and over: 23 days per year

Sick Leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for a total of 12 days per year.

Employees receive nine paid holidays per year.

Insurance benefits are offered to employees working over 32 hours per week.

New employees are eligible for insurance coverage on the first day of the month following one full month of employment.
