Basic Function

Under direct supervision of the Traffic Supervisor (Signals & ITS), assists in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of traffic signal devices (signals, school flashers, etc.) and related equipment in accordance with City policies and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
 
This is the entry level position in Signal Technician series. With acceptable job performance and passing annual evaluations, the incumbent will be reclassified to Signal Technician I after achieving three years experience in this position.
 

Nature & Scope

Typical duties include:
 
1.         Assist in the installation of traffic signals and school signals. This may include, but not be limited to, the installation of conduit above and below ground; installation and termination of signal and detector conductors; installation of poles, mast arms, and foundations; installation of loops; installation of traffic signal control cabinets; and all traffic signal related items.
 
2.         Learn to troubleshoot signal operations to the unit level (e.g., traffic signal controllers, conflict monitors, load switches etc.). Learn to program traffic signal and school flasher related electronic equipment.
 
3.         Assist in the maintenance and operation of the school flasher management system.
 
4.         Assist in maintenance activities on traffic signals, communications systems and associated equipment in accordance with City's Signal Maintenance policy or as directed.
 
5.         Perform or assist in performing traffic studies such as traffic counts, turning movement counts, speed and delay studies etc., as directed.
 
6.         Cut and trim trees or shrubs as required improving visibility of traffic control devices.   
 
7.         From time to time, may install or assist in the installation of traffic signs, guard rails and pavement markings.
 
8.         Accurately report and document all work activities.
 
9.         After one year may be on call on a rotating basis. Supervisor or Traffic Operations Manager is available by telephone to assist with any questions or as a source of direction and clarification.
 
10.       Perform other duties as required.

Required Skills

High School diploma/GED plus formalized training or experience in an electrical trade, or electronics or IP (Internet Protocol) communications. Requires IMSA or TEEX Work Zone Safety training within one year of hire.
Basic operational knowledge of Windows-based personal computers required. Ability to read blue prints, technical manuals and schematics is desirable. Must have good reading and writing skills sufficient to understand City Code of Ordinances and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
A Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License is required within one year of hire date.
Physical ability and endurance to perform assigned tasks.
Must pass criminal background check and have a valid TX driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Regular full-time employees are assigned to work at least 40 hours per week, and are eligible for the City's benefit package, subject to the conditions and limitations of each program.
