The Pasadena Fire Department is excited to announce an immediate opening for a Plans Examiner. Under general supervision, the Plans Examiner reviews construction drawings of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical plans for residential and non-residential buildings both on and off the public counter and prepares comprehensive written plan review comments.

Essential Functions

The major responsibilities of this position are listed below. Fore more detailed information, please refer to the job description.

  • Checks plans and specifications and structural calculations for residential, commercial, industrial, and public buildings for compliance with California building and fire codes, Low Impact Development (LID), grading ordinances and other related county, state and federal laws.
  • Serves the public at the permit counter on a regular basis; ensures that plans meet the requirements of related fire and building codes, regulations, and restrictions. 
  • Requests corrections of deficiencies where required.
  • Performs inspections of job sites to evaluate discrepancies between plans, specifications, and work completed.
  • Consults with engineers, architects, contractors, or the public to discuss problems with initial plans and required changes.
  • Performs field inspections in assistance to other work unit inspectors, or upon request of the Fire Marshal.
  • Responds to verbal or written inquiries.
  • Provides technical assistance to engineers, architects, contractors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Interprets and explains requirements and restrictions relative to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Develops alternative methods to comply with those requirements and restrictions.
  • assists in researching and developing code changes or procedural changes to enhance customer services.
  • Will assess damages to properties and turn in reports to the appropriate government agency before and after disaster events.
  • Assists others in the performance of related tasks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, architecture or a related field.
  • One year (two years preferred) of experience in structural design, architecture or fire plan checking.
  • ICC certification as  a Fire Plans Examiner is required.
  • California Engineer or Architect license desired.   
SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, interview panel, and department interviews.

The probationary work period for this position is one year and is part of the Pasadena Management Association bargaining unit.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a  Plans Examiner.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.

The City is closed on alternate Fridays and most staff observe a 9/80 work schedule.
