Duties Summary

Plans, directs, coordinates the operations activities concerned with the acquisition, maintenance, repair, replacement and inspection of all police department equipment including departmental fleet vehicles, radio communication equipment and other personal safety equipment; oversees the Derelict/Abandoned Vehicle Removal Program; and performs other related duties as required.

Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) years of supervisory experience in the installation, repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive and mechanical equipment, of which two (2) years shall have included the preparation, implementation and maintenance of operating policies and procedures relative to the servicing, overhauling, testing and replacement of such equipment, including the preparation of bid specifications and budget.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3) and Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection (PMVI) Inspector's certification.

Knowledge of: principles and practices of supervision; theory and principles of gasoline and diesel engines, methods, equipment and materials used in the repair, overhaul and testing of a variety of automotive equipment; use of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanic trade; occupational hazards and safety practices of the trade; operation and care of police equipment; purchasing, storekeeping and inventory control principles and practices; office and recordkeeping practices and procedures; filing and report writing techniques.

Ability to: prioritize, direct, coordinate and review the work of subordinates; develop and implement a program for the acquisition, operation, maintenance, repair and replacement of automotive equipment; communicate clearly orally and in writing; draft policies, procedures and directives; develop budgetary, recordkeeping and reporting systems; analyze equipment use, repair and condition records and formulate repair and replacement schedules; evaluate operational requirements and recommends improvements thereto; encourage safety practices and enforce safety rules; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain effective relationships with others.
