POSITION IS PART TIME ON-CALL NON-PERMANENT
 
The Washington Youth Academy (WYA) is recruiting to fill one non-permanent part time on-call Cook2 position.

Under the supervision of the Cook 3 of the Washington Youth Academy (WYA), the Part Time On-Call Cook 2 (Youth Academy Cook) performs skilled cooking duties and lead food preparation. Regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of students (cadets) including during non-traditional hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
 
ABOUT THE CHALLENGE PROGRAM
The Washington Youth Academy is part of the National Guard ChalleNGe Program (NGYCP).  Established under the authority of both federal and state law, the WYA is a state-run residential and post-residential program for 16 to 18 year olds who have either dropped out of high school or are at risk of not graduating from high school.

Responsibilities

Work proficiently in all areas of preparation, cooking, food service and clean up.  This position is responsible for preparing institutional meals for the cadets who reside at the WYA.  Works independently utilizing menus and recipes provided by the Cook3 to prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and sack lunches for cadets and staff. 

Leads and participates in the cleaning of the kitchen and equipment and assures that standards of sanitation and safety are met. 

Lead and instruct cadets in general cooking, baking, meat cutting, and food preparation and service; evaluates cadets on performance, progress and attitude; oversees apportionment and method of food service in dining areas. 

Assist the Cook3 with the administration, planning, reporting and other duties as required to ensure efficient and effective food service operations at the Academy.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduation or GED equivalent
AND
Two years work experience with food preparation in a large scale food service delivery operation (e.g. restaurant, buffet, etc.).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Current food handler's permit prior to the first day employment (in accordance with RCW 69.06.010 and WAC 246-217).
Experience
Working with at-risk youth.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

WORKING HOURS:
Position is part time on-call.  Hours may vary on occasion to accommodate special events.  This position is expected to work beyond the established core hours when necessary to accomplish the day-to-day duties and responsibilities.

Must be willing to work periodic weekends and nights depending on program activities and requirements, including responding to emergency situations in a reasonable amount of time when they involve student health, safety or security.
 

BACKGROUND CHECK:
Must successfully complete a pre-employment personal history and criminal background check investigation, which includes fingerprinting. The background check is required for all employees of the Washington Youth Academy due to the nature of these positions (working with vulnerable youth) and the safety requirements of the job. Applicants are required to complete and sign a WMD Applicant Background and Disclosure Statement and a Waiver and Authority to Release Information Form. Candidates will not have access to any investigative materials and files. 

Must be willing and able to participate in periodic background checks in accordance with department policy. Failure to successfully complete any required background check may be cause for termination.

DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING AND USE:
Willing not to use or be in possession of illegal narcotics or controlled substances while on or off duty.

Willing and able to be free from excessive alcohol consumption.

Willing and able to pass drug testing requirements, including pre-employment (to include testing when employees change job classifications due to promotion or transfer or there is reasonable suspicion).
 
WYA CAMPUS:
Ability, willingness, desire and commitment to work with at-risk youth in a 24/7 highly structured residential setting requiring extensive interaction and contact with at-risk youth and parents who may be disgruntled, angry, disrespectful (use of profanity, name calling, etc.), depressed and at times confrontational.

The WYA campus is a tobacco, alcohol, drug and weapons free facility. Weapons and alcohol are not permitted anywhere on campus including in employee vehicles. Use of tobacco products is not permitted anywhere within the confines of the Youth Academy or in the view of students when performing off campus duties and responsibilities.

Individuals working with at-risk youth in a residential setting are subject to safety and security surveillance.

Willing to work in and around military facilities and programs.
 
NGYCP-CA HANDS-OFF LEADERSHIP GUIDANCE:
Must be willing and committed to following the NGYCP-CA Hands-Off Leadership Guidance which states in part that no staff member may touch a Cadet in an aggressive manner for any reason, or use abusive language as a means of discipline or coercive leadership.  Hands-Off leadership prohibits Staff members from using unprofessional language, including profanity, vulgarity or off-color jokes when interacting with, correcting or motivating Cadets.  The uncompromising standard for behavior and language on the part of Staff is nothing less than complete transparency and total professionalism.

TRAVEL/TRAINING/POLICIES:
Must complete annual first aid and CPR training/re-certification.

Must be willing and able to periodically travel in and out of the state for up to one week at a time.

Additionally, incumbent may be required to attend formal Youth Challenge staff training courses (up to one week each) and on the job training at another National Guard Bureau Youth Challenge Program (up to 2 weeks).

Must comply with Department policies and procedures governing workplace conduct.
 
DRIVER'S LICENSE:
Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license and be qualified to drive a state vehicle.
