Description

The Business Specialist is responsible for cultivating existing and developing new partnerships with the local business community and providing innovative services to support entrepreneurs and businesses. The Business Specialist is responsible for creating and promoting a collaborative and engaging co-work space in the Library's future Business Center Launch. This position is responsible for developing, planning, and coordinating business-related programs, including seminars, roundtables, guest speakers, and training opportunities. The Business Specialist is also responsible for providing specialized business reference assistance.

This position requires initiative and the ability to engage business leaders, build networks, execute programming, and identify and recruit speakers. The Business Specialist must demonstrate an interest in providing services and resources to patrons of all ages and diverse skills. This position also assists customers of all ages at public service desks with information and reference questions; assists and instructs customers with their use of library computers, personal electronic devices and other technologies; plans and presents library programs and performs collection development duties. Demonstrates enthusiasm and curiosity about the changing world of public libraries; is customer focused and forward thinking; is knowledgeable about library materials and technology and is eager to share what they know with library customers. Schedule includes evening and weekend hours and may be in charge of the library building during those times.

Examples of Duties

• Develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate business-related programming

• Coordinate business-related programs requiring outside speakers

• Create an engaging and productive co-work environment in the Launch space

• Conduct outreach to educate public and raise awareness of business resources at the library

• Build partnerships with relevant leaders, businesses, organizations, and groups

• Assist customers in their use of the library technology and equipment; performs basic troubleshooting with hardware, software, and webpages.

• Develop and expand print and online resources related to business development.

• Maintains current awareness of developments in technology as they relate to libraries and library users, including knowledge of mobile and handheld devices.

• Assist and advise customers with their use of library resources, including books, movies, music, media and electronic resources.

• Answer informational and reference questions for customers of all ages.

• Coordinate and contributes content to internal staff and public webpages.

• Participate in weeding and collection management/development.

• Merchandise books and other library materials to enhance their appeal and promote their use.

• Participate in departmental and library committees

• Attend and participate in professional activities, conferences and committees, including on-site and virtual professional development opportunities and training.

• Assist with monitoring and correcting customer behavior to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Business Administration and/or a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent business-related education and experience.

• Experience with networking, entrepreneurism, and businesses development resources

• Knowledgeable of emerging business trends

• Exceptional customer service skills and enthusiasm for working with the public.

• Ability to work with library customers and staff in a consistently friendly, respectful, and efficient manner.

• Knowledge of and interest in books, music, movies, and other media in all their forms

• Ability to locate information and answer customer questions using bibliographic searching tools (e.g., FirstSearch) and print electronic reference materials.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of the Internet, computers, mobile devices, and social media.

• Ability to work as part of a team within the department and the library as a whole, including leading and coordinating the work of others.

• Knowledge of professional-level library practices, and an interest in keeping up with developments within the field.

• Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule.

• Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule as needed.

• Good vision and hearing.

• Manual dexterity to operate computer and phone equipment.

• Physical ability to lift library materials and push fully loaded carts of library materials.

• Valid driver's license, acceptable driving history, and personal automobile for job-related transportation.

• Satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• Customer service experience in a public library experience preferred.

• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The Champaign Public Library offers a comprehensive benefit package to regular full- and part-time employees that includes paid sick leave, vacation, and nine paid holidays each year.

Employees working 29 hours or less are not eligible for health insurance.
