Description

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to provide police protection to the community.  Employees in this classification perform skilled protective and investigative work. Position is responsible for protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminal suspects, and enforcement of laws and ordinances. Performs related work as directed.

Examples of Duties

  • Conducts routine preventive patrol in designated areas; initiates contacts with business operators and residents to establish communication within the community.
  • Responds to calls and takes action in situation requiring police intervention, such as responding to domestic or neighborhood disputes or disturbances.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public; informs citizens of available community services; provides referrals to city, county, and state agencies.
  • Maintains the peace and safety of the community by quelling public disturbances and maintaining order at group functions.
  • Provides for the safe and convenient flow of traffic and pedestrians within the community; investigates traffic accidents, enforces traffic violations, promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety, reports unsafe road conditions, and conducts DUI investigations.
  • Conducts initial investigation into crimes such as robbery, burglary, or assaults; conducts investigations concerning civil disturbances such as land-lord/tenant, failure to pay, or child custody; conducts follow-up investigations of crimes and other incidents; conducts surveillance of areas for suspected criminal activity.
  • Enforces laws and arrest lawbreakers; issues Notices to Appear, and traffic citations; prepares written reports, forms, and other documents are required.
  • Testifies in civil and criminal court proceedings and gives depositions.
  • Provides a variety of specialized services when properly trained and so assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED, an evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required; supplemented by vocational/technical training in law enforcement or closely related field; supplemented by little or no previous experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Minimum age of 19 years.
  • United States Citizen at time of application (F.S.S. 943.13(2)).
  • Complete Driver's History (Obtained from the Courthouse Traffic Division).
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult.All candidates must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13).
  • If ever arrested, candidates must submit an official court disposition with the application.Official court dispositions can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred.
