Under direction, to make major and minor repairs on fire equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Does mechanical work such as trouble-shooting, motor tune-ups, major and minor repairing of motors, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, automotive air conditioning and associated parts and units on fire trucks and automobiles.
  • Re-bores and rebuilds engines.
  • Overhauls and repairs air, vacuum, hydraulic, and mechanical brakes.
  • Overhauls, repairs, and rebuilds special equipment on fire trucks such as piston, gear,and centrifugal pumps, pump engines, pressure gauges, direct and indirect cooling systems, and pump primers.
  • Does light welding and fabrications.
  • Rebuilds and installs pumps including all plumbing.
  • Repairs and overhauls such equipment as crawler tractors, graders, generators, and lighting plants;
  • May make repairs in the field.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Employment Standards

Three (3) years of experience repairing heavy motorized equipment, including one (1) year of experience with diesel engines.

Possession of a valid California Class A Driver's License required to successfully pass the six (6) months probationary period.

All Kern County employees are designated "Disaster Service Workers" through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2-Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services). As Disaster Service Workers, all County employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
 
Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at county expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which one (1) immediate appointment will be made at the Kern County Fire Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.

Admittance to each phase of the examination will require a Government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

WRITTEN EXAM (100%): May include knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engine mechanics as applied to maintenance and repair; and the procedures, tools, equipment, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of both light and heavy motorized equipment; knowledge of smog control devices and diagnostic equipment.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
