Substitute Positions are on-call only.

Qualified candidates will be invited to the testing process approximately once per month. Candidates who take part in and do not pass the testing process must wait 90 days before being able to test again. Candidates who are invited to take part in the testing process and do not appear will not be invited again unless they submit an additional application during the following month.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the Custodial Services Manager, Lead Custodian, or a site-based administrator, maintains an assigned school plant, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, and secure manner; performs minor building maintenance; and performs a variety of skilled duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
The Lead Custodian classification is responsible for custodial services at an assigned District school site or facility. In addition to performing regular cleaning duties, incumbents coordinate activities between day and evening-shift personnel to ensure cleaning assignments are properly completed and meet proper standards of cleanliness, safety and appearance. Incumbents have primary responsibility for all cleaning at their site including minor maintenance and unskilled graffiti removal and ensure custodial personnel have the necessary supplies to complete their assignments. 
 
The Custodian classification performs duties in the cleaning and maintaining an assigned section of a school, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, and secure manner.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
• Receives supervision from the Custodial Services Manager.
• Receives technical and work direction from the Lead Custodian and general work direction from site-based administrators.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Cleans classrooms, halls, walkways, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, and other school facilities according to a set schedule and in accordance with building, health, and safety standards;
• Vacuums, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, disinfects, mops, seals, and polishes floors; removes gum, staples, and stains from floors;
• Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; 
• Cleans chalkboards and chalk rails, dry-erase boards and marker rails, erasers, and other instructional equipment;
• Empties and cleans waste receptacle and pencil sharpeners; 
• Disinfects telephones;
• Cleans, scrubs and disinfects rest rooms; washes windows and walls; polishes metal work, cleans sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures; fills dispensers and collects from receptacles;
• Picks up paper and other debris from buildings and grounds; performs general clean up at job site;
• Performs minor maintenance of custodial equipment and materials; 
• Maintains various classroom and restroom supplies including paper products, soap, and related items;
• Adjusts and arranges furniture and equipment; 
• Sets up or breaks down equipment in auditorium, gymnasium, or classrooms for special events and meetings; moves carts, teacher desks, file cabinets and other miscellaneous furnishings as needed;
• Performs minor maintenance and non-technical repairs such as replacing fluorescent or incandescent bulbs or adjusting venetian blinds and light fixtures;
• Performs unskilled graffiti removal on a variety of interior and exterior surfaces including wood, metal, glass, plaster, plastic, brick, asphalt, and concrete; reports graffiti that is highly time-intensive or needs more skilled removal;
• Performs security duties relating to the buildings and grounds during assigned times; locks and unlocks doors and gates; sets alarms; turns lights off; reports damage or unsafe conditions as appropriate;
• Reports problems or concerns to the Lead Custodian or Custodial Services Manager; confer with Lead Custodian or Custodial Services Manager regarding schedule and any special needs.
 
Other Related Duties
• May request people who are loitering after hours to leave school grounds;
• Performs other related duties as required.

Special: A valid, California Class C, driver's license may be required, and if so, must be maintained during the course of employment.
 
Physical Requirements: Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, maintain balance, lift/carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance or up to 100 lbs. with assistance, use wrists or hands repetitively in a twisting motion or while applying pressure, use both hands, arms, feet, and legs simultaneously, stoop/bend, reach overhead, push/pull, have dexterity of fingers/hands and muscular coordination, have color vision or the ability to distinguish shades, speak clearly, hear normal conversation, and see small details.

APPOINTMENT: In accordance with Education Code Section 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months during which time an employee must demonstrate at least an overall satisfactory performance in order to attain permanent status in the classified service.
