Duties Summary

Supervises and participates in inspecting buildings and other structures for compliance with fire safety codes, regulations and laws; reviews construction plans and specifications for buildings and other structures for compliance with fire prevention and safety codes, regulations and laws; plans and carries out fire inspection and enforcement activities within an assigned geographic area; and performs other related duties as required.

Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks. Part-time experience must be pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to completion of two years of general college with some coursework pertinent to the field and four years of firefighting experience two of which shall have been as a Fire Fighter III (prevention assignment) or Fire Prevention Inspector I in the Kauai Fire Department.

License:  Possession of a valid Hawaii State Driver's License (Type 3)

Knowledge of:  principles and practices of supervision; firefighting principles, practices, methods and equipment as they pertain to fire prevention; fire prevention and safety codes, regulations and laws, methods and techniques of inspection and investigation; departmental policies, procedures and practices pertaining to fire prevention work; geography of the County of Kauai, principles and practices of public relations.

Ability to:  plan, lay out and supervise the work of others; apply knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques and equipment, and fire prevention standards and requirements to inspecting buildings and structures and to reviewing construction plans and specifications; establish good working relationships; speak before groups; keep records and prepare clear and concise reports.
