Definition

Under general supervision is responsible for the maintenance, replacement and repair of building plumbing and piping equipment and related systems; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains all types of plumbing devices associated with heating, cooling, steam, and water systems;

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains all types of backflow devices;

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains all types of fire standpipes and sprinkler systems;

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains centrifugal water pumps and related parts;

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains all types and sizes of domestic water heaters;

Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and/or maintains the various devices associated with steam or hot water boilers and heating systems;

Operates a motor vehicle to reach various work sites;

Coordinates and instructs plumber helpers in work assignments;

Reads blueprints and schematic diagrams to locate/understand various systems;

Operates a computer to store, retrieve, and/or modify information, records and reports;

Communicates (verbally and written) establishing effective working relationships with school personnel and others;

Performs drain opening/cleaning duties;

Maintains appropriate written records of work assignments;

May prepare boilers for routine annual insurance inspection.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade and five (5) years of experience in the plumbing trade, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey level; or four (4) years of experience as a Plumber Helper with the Columbus Board of Education.  Substitution(s):  Possession of a certificate of completion of apprenticeship in the plumbing trade or the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council may be substituted for the required experience.
 
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
 
Possession of a valid journey level plumber's license from any jurisdiction.

Possession of a City of Columbus Plumber's License.
 
Possession of a State of Ohio Backflow Tester Certificate.
 
Possession of a State of Ohio Automatic Sprinkler Water Supply Certificate.

NOTE:
 
(1)  If an applicant does not possess the City of Columbus Plumber's License at the time of filing the application, the applicant will be given 170 days from the date of appointment to obtain the license, at the employee's expense.
 
(2)  If an applicant does not possess the Backflow Tester Certificate or Automatic Sprinkler Water Supply Certificate, the applicant will be given one year from the date of appointment to obtain one, and one year from the date of obtaining it to obtain the other.  Training to receive the certifications will be provided at the Board of Education's expense.

Approved applicants will be notified by email of their scheduled test date and time.
 
Candidates must bring **a valid driver's license** to the test.
 
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score.  The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years.  If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and may include a pre-employment drug test. 
 
The certification process will be the top 10 candidates on the eligible list, or top 25% of the list, whichever is greater, based on overall test score.
