Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to operate and maintain street maintenance equipment as well as lead and assist crews in a variety of street construction and maintenance work. Operates a variety of heavy duty construction equipment that requires a high level of skill and competence. Examples of equipment are, but not limited to, motor grader, bulldozer, vactor truck, road roller, dump truck, street sweeper and large excavators. This is accomplished by directly interacting with a supervisor, scheduling work tasks, ensuring equipment and materials are sufficient and preparing a safe work environment. Other duties include operating equipment during inclement weather and fulfilling related tasks and assignments required.
This is a continuous recruitment and open until filled.

Examples of Duties

  • Fulfills project requirements by operating necessary heavy construction equipment in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Repairs asphalt/concrete failures and utility cuts.
  • Compacts asphalt pavement with road roller.
  • Removes pavement and excavates underlying material.
  • Installs, cleans and/or repairs basins, manholes and storm drain pipes.
  • Sets road grade with laser or transit.
  • Excavates and re-grades ditches, streams and canals.
  • Cleans and mows ditches, streams and canals.
  • Oversees and assigns work to crews including Equipment Operators.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Files necessary reports on equipment repairs and malfunctions.
  • Maintains the progress of the project by communicating with a supervisor on the ins and outs of the project on a daily basis.
  • Operates truck and motor grader during inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and;
  • two (2) years of experience operating various pieces of heavy construction equipment to include, but not limited to, motor grader, bulldozer, dump truck, street sweeper, vactor truck, and large excavators (one year of supervisory or lead worker experience is preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • traffic and highway safety rules and regulations.
  • the geographical layout of the City, including street names and neighborhoods.
  • hazards involved in the operation of construction vehicles and equipment and safety precautions to be observed in their operation.
  • local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
  • operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of difficult and complex heavy-duty construction equipment and related attachments.

  • judge terrain, determine the amount of cut and fill required and correctly alter earth to desired construction design.

  • work in a variety of work conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.

  • work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
  • work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • meet mental and physical demands of the job.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid N.C. CDL Driver's License (Class A or B) at the time of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid NC CDL Class A with Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire, if not already possessed at the time of hire.
