Job Responsibilities

Works as a member of a claim unit providing workers' compensation benefits to injured workers.  Authorizes medical and lost time payments in accordance with the S.C. Workers' Compensation Law.  Manages a variety of claims.  Reviews medical  documentation and authorizes income replacement as appropriate. Pays related medical bills within 30 days. With the assistance of in house legal counsel Interprets Workers' Compensation Commission orders.  Makes recommendations for vocational rehabilitation and/or special medical management referrals. Develops procedures and controls for efficient claim handling.  Attends depositions, viewings, hearings and informal conferences before the Workers' Compensation Commission.  Evaluates facts in determining legal liability of the state or other parties. 
 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree and experience in workers' compensation insurance or claims examining/adjusting.   Requires successful candidate to become a licensed adjuster in South Carolina within one year of employment.
 

Preferred Qualifications

Licensed insurance adjuster with extensive workers' compensation claim adjusting experience.  Knowledge of workers' compensation law, rules and regulations.  Knowledge of insurance practices and procedures.  Knowledge of legal processes, medical terminology, costs of medical treatment, and insurance policies.  Knowledge of methods and techniques for  determining compensable wages.
