Denver's Parks and Recreation Department boasts one of the most expansive and diverse park systems in the Rocky Mountain West offering: more than 350 urban parks and parkways, 36 lakes, 7 golf courses, one of the largest skate parks in the region, 14,000 acres of mountain parks, the Buffalo Bill Museum and bison herd and a Ropes Challenge Course. We also provide and manage 27 neighborhood recreation centers with 13 indoor and 16 outdoor pools that offer hundreds of affordable programs throughout the year to our community.

About Our Job

The City and County of Denver's Department of Recreation are seeking Recreation Interns (Unpaid) to join our team to gain experience in a recreation setting with facility management and program planning.  The internship corresponds to the academic calendar and is available in the spring, fall, and summer.

Recreation Interns will be eligible to work in one of Denver's regional, local or neighborhood center with exposure to many of our core program areas; arts and culture, aquatics, active older adults, fitness, outdoor recreation, city-wide sports, youth sports and social enrichment. Mission:  As stewards of Denver's legacy, the Department of Parks and Recreation is dedicated to customer satisfaction and enhancing lives by providing innovative programs and safe, beautiful, sustainable places.

Work Schedule:  Students will be required to work the full amount of hours in order to fulfill the credited hours of the college or university (typically 480 hrs.).  Center hours vary, which may require working different shifts including night, weekends, and holidays.  Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule.  

Internship Program Goal:

The Recreation internship program is designed to bring the formal academic training and practical work experiences together while providing support for the departments' mission statements. We strive to provide each student with a well-rounded experience by introducing them to a diverse and comprehensive look at all the departments involved with the success of the of Denver Parks and Recreation.

  • Gain experience in leadership and organizational skills in a recreational setting while assisting with supervision and administrative functions; gaining exposure to the following:
    • Facility operations
    • Staff scheduling and
    • Staff development
    • Budget planning and other administrative operations:
    • Program planning processes for core program areas
    • Learning and adhering to customer service expectations, both internally and externally  
  • Gain an understanding and appreciation of the role, duties, and responsibilities of a full-time career professional while serving the public
  • Develop and refine communication skills and problem-solving skills through direct participation and contact with the general public 
  • Experience hands-on fieldwork experience 
  • Community outreach to further public relations for Denver Parks and Recreation
  • Enable the student to realize his/her own strengths and weaknesses
Responsibilities include: 
  • Create personal goals and objectives for your internship
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times, including being appropriately dressed and arriving at all meetings, programs, events, and activities in a timely manner
  • Be friendly, attentive, consistent and empowered when engaging the community
  • Communicate effectively with your assigned supervisor. This includes asking your supervisor about any problems you do not feel comfortable solving yourself.
  • Assist with specific programs and special events as assigned:
  • including budgeting, cost analysis, and purchases
  • assisting with program planning and promotion
  • Attendance to all relevant staff in-services

About You

The ideal applicant will be/have:

  • A current junior or senior in an accredited four-year college or university concentrating in the studies of Recreation Management, Leisure Studies, Sports Management or directly related field with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Great attention to detail
  • Customer service skills
  • General knowledge of a variety of recreation programs
  • Ability to instruct and lead group activities
  • Ability to follow oral, written and demonstrated instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other employees, participants and the public
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrate passion for the field of Recreation
