Receiving Applications for Part Time Applicant Pool

Under general supervision, performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering appropriate emergency medical care to patients on-site and while in route to hospital. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non?emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons under the guidance of local protocols and transporting persons to a medical facility. This position is differentiated from an Emergency Medical Technician  by the additional re­quirements of having the ability to establish an intravenous line and administer specified solutions by intravenous infusion; performing pulmonary ventilation by means of an esophageal obturator airway or esophageal gastric tube airway. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but must exercise considerable inde­pendent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short?term relief. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Reports to an EMS Shift Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  •  Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant, performs necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support.
  • Advanced EMT trained in approved training programs, certified by the Board of Medical Examiners to perform medical acts, and functioning in an approved mobile intensive care program may function such skills in accordance to local protocols that have been approved by local medical director. Will need to have basic computer skills in order to complete all call reports using a department approved electronic report writing system.
  • Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work and in ambulance service and operation; maintains knowledge of new or modified operational protocols and procedures; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
  • Maintains competency in trip report writing, computer skills and literacy; this includes Microsoft Windows operating system and software related to the Windows operating system, i.e. (Word, Excel, HER system)

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  •  Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment, maintaining proper inventory of equip­ment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes ambulance and equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for special­ized attention.
  • Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities.
  • Provides assistance to members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations in County, as requested.
  • Completion of all run reports by end of shift
  • Performs other related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
 
Graduation from high school and some experience as an Advance EMT; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Certification by the North Carolina Medical Examiners Board as an Advance EMT. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.  Please reference Title 21, Sub-Chapter 32H, Section .0502 of the North Carolina Administrative Code for specific certification requirements.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including suction units, immobiliza­tion equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and automatic cardiac/defibrillator monitors; two-way radios, mechanics tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are for Very Heavy Work.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to  define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical terminology and emergency response codes.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using emergency medical equipment and hand tools.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as emergency medical equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)  Must be able to communicate via a telephone and two-way radio.
