THE DEPARTMENT
The Recreation Department provides a full range of recreational and educational activities for youth and adults, facility rentals, community events, and diverse programs and services to enhance quality of life in El Cerrito.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)

Duties and Responsibilities:
Typical job duties are:

  • All duties and responsibilities of a Senior Lifeguard, Lifeguard II and Swim Instructor;
  • Acting as the Lead Pool Manager for the following programs: Swim Lessons, Junior Lifeguard Camp, Swim Camp, and Recreation Swim (including Family Fun Night)
  • Conducting proper opening and closing procedures of the aquatic facility
  • Assisting in All staff trainings and meetings
  • Analyzing program needs and recommend new and innovative program ideas
  • Working as a Lead with Lifeguards and Swim Instructors and offering assistance in maintaining the proper execution of all aspects of facility rentals and programs
  • Ensuring all policies of the City of El Cerrito are followed during all programs, special events and facility use
  • Providing customer service and problem solving
  • Performing functions of REC TRAC registration software applications
  • Preparing reconciliation reports of all revenue received
  • Planning and organizing program elements
  • Maintaining inventory supply
  • Acting as the direct contact for program participants to explain policies, procedures, and problem solve
  • Assisting with the Swim Lesson program
  • Scheduling staff for facility rentals and City of El Cerrito programming
  • Creating, modifying and implementing age-appropriate program curriculums
  • Creating and distributing marketing materials
  • Assisting in the implementation and scheduling of staff, programs and services
  • Setting up proper furniture arrangements, equipment, and facility maintenance
  • Monitor activity enrollment in aquatics programs and camps.  Call waitlist and/or cancel programs based upon enrollment minimums and maximums.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education:

  • At least three or more years experience or equivalent working in aquatics is highly desirable, leadership work experience, possession of Water Safety Instructor certification and at least one additional instructor level certification in Lifeguarding or other related areas. Minimum 18 years of age. American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • C.P.O./A.F.O. certification or ability to obtain certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid
  • WSI & teaching experience desired
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor  and Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety personnel a plus 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of philosophy, objectives, and requirements of supervising a municipal aquatics program
  • Knowledge of latest safety standards and information related to aquatics
  • Ability to utilize staff and volunteers effectively
  • Ability to function effectively without direct supervision and develop effective working relationships with City employees and the public
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to receive direction and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use simple math
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to evaluate personnel and programs effectively
  • Ability to be reliable, dependable, show creativity and enthusiasm
  • Knowledge of office equipment, practices and procedures
  • Ability to interact with the public, including handling citizen complaints in a professional, tactful, patient and courteous manner
  • Ability to swim, tread water, perform rescues involving exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects, and to perform retrieval of heavy items from 13' depth
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekdays and weekends. 

This position is non-benefited.

In accordance with California state law, you are entitled to three (3) paid sick leave days per year. These days are eligible for use following your 90th day of employment with the City.
