THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
This recruitment is open to the public and is being held to establish an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies within OC Public Works and other agencies within the County. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in lower classifications within OC Public Works Fleet Services.

OC FLEET SERVICES
OC Fleet Services (OCFS) is a core Service Area of the OC Public Works Department responsible for vehicle life-cycle management, maintenance/repair, and compliance with State and Federal emissions requirements. OC Fleet Services provides responsive, cost effective fleet services to agencies/departments of the County of Orange. They assure safe and properly maintained public fleet vehicles to the internal service customers.
 

 

THE OPPORTUNITY
The County of Orange Public Works has an excellent opportunity for a skilled Fleet Technician II performing journeyman level work in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and other operating defects in automobiles and gasoline and diesel powered trucks; diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operating defects in gasoline and diesel powered heavy construction equipment; repairing, modifying, and painting automobiles and heavy equipment exteriors and interiors; installing or equipping public-safety vehicles with emergency equipment; and/or performing specialized duties involving welding and fabrication related to mobile vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance, hydraulic systems, fuel tanks, and fuel systems parts.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
 
The ideal candidate will be an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician in Automotive and Truck series. Will possess a Class "A" Driver License with the following endorsements: passenger, hazmat,  doubles and triples, and tanker. Will be experienced using fleet tracking program "Fleet Focus" and have extensive professional work experience and/or knowledge in the following core competencies:
 

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
  • Techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing light, medium and heavy gasoline, alternate fuel and diesel powered equipment and related components.
  • Theory, care and operation of gasoline and diesel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of heavy and other mechanic equipment
  • Diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
  • Repair and overhaul light, medium and heavy gasoline and diesel-driven powered equipment, busses and emergency generators related components with a minimum of supervision
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic and air brake systems
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of heavy and other mechanical equipment
  • Preventive maintenance inspection methods
  • Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered light, medium and heavy equipment
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work
  • Diagnose and repair diagnostic trouble codes 
  • Familiar with State and Federal mandated inspections for vehicles and equipment
  • Repair and overhaul all-terrain vehicles such as quads, gems, Polaris rangers, gators, Kubota, Kawasaki                                                                                                  

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS
  • Read, understand and follow written and oral instructions such as factory service bulletins, automotive, light truck, and/or heavy construction equipment manuals and memorandums
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work
  • Advise and check the work of helpers
  • Prepares parts requisitions, work time and material records

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Eligible List: Once the assessment has been completed, Human Resource Services will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to the selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
