 ABOUT THE POSITION
 
Physical Therapist I/II: Under general direction, this position is to provide assessment, case management and physical therapy services to physically disabled children, and to do related work as required. Positions are assigned to the California Children Services Program's Medical Therapy Unit under the Children's Health Services Branch of the Public Health Department.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
 
Physical Therapist I: Possession of a current physical therapy license in the state of California and graduation from an accredited physical therapy program is required.
 
Physical Therapist II: This classification represents journey-level positions in the Physical Therapist I/II class series.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Physical Therapist I/II: Provides physical therapy services for physically disabled children; institutes therapy as prescribed by physicians; confers with physicians or other physical therapists to determine the type of treatment required in each case; evaluates therapeutic techniques that include but are not limited to gait training, transfer training, therapeutic exercise, community skills, caregiver training, home program instruction, consultation and modalities as indicated; conducts equipment assessment with a physical or occupational therapist; participates in a comprehensive team approach to client services; completes medical records which include evaluation reports, equipment assessments, progress summaries, and clinical notes; process needed information for authorization purposes; plans physical therapy services for physically disabled children; administers treatments as prescribed by physicians; assesses the client's gross motor functioning and implements treatments; provides equipment assessment/reports for authorization; consultation with the families and schools; coordinates with occupational therapists and other community team members to promote a comprehensive team approach; participates in medical therapy conferences; arranges training programs for therapy students or new therapists assigned to the unit for orientation and training; assists in arranging clinics; interprets the therapy program and policies to parents, relatives and the visiting public.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Physical Therapist I/II: Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:
 
Knowledge of: Evaluation and treatment directed toward increasing range of motion, increasing strength, assessing tone, therapeutic exercise, facilitating gross motor development, gait assessment and training, transfer training, wheelchair mobility; setting functional goals, skeletal anatomy, kinesiology, and pathophysiology related to physical therapy and the objectives of physical therapy treatment.
 
Ability to: Explain and interpret assessment criteria/results, goals/objectives and treatments to clients and parents; choose the appropriate therapeutic technique; use tact and understanding in dealing with patients and families; interact with other professional staff involved with the client; prepare accurate and concise case records; understand and complete oral and written directions; organize and track case management of the clients; teach the client, caregivers, families and appropriate school personnel to ensure effective follow through.
 
Physical Therapist I: Possession of a current physical therapy license in the state of California and graduation from an accredited physical therapy program is required, along with one year of pediatric experience.
 
Physical Therapist II: Possession of a current physical therapy license in the state of California and graduation from an accredited physical therapy program is required, along with two years of experience equivalent to a Physical Therapist I including one year in pediatrics.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Shasta County California Children's Services is seeking a pediatric physical therapist. We have a permanent full time physical therapist vacancy at the Medical Therapy Unit in Redding California.

The CCS Medical Therapy Program is a state mandated program that offers physical therapy and occupational therapy services for children between the ages of 0 – 21 with a qualified orthopedic and or neurological diagnosis. Physical and occupational therapists in the program provide comprehensive rehabilitation services including evaluation and treatment for pediatric clients, assessing for durable medical equipment and orthotics, participation in Medical Therapy Conferences, as well as consultation with other rehabilitation professionals and educational staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; stand; communicate person to person and on the telephone (verbal/auditory); visually read and complete forms/medical reports; visually/cognitively assess client treatment and safety (close vision, distant vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus); upper extremity fine motor and gross motor coordination to manipulate small objects, access computer equipment, operate tools/equipment, basic office tasks, and coordination/movement necessary to complete client treatment.

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; use proper body mechanics at all times; to lift one to twenty-five pounds from floor to waist; lift ten pounds from waist to shoulder; carry twenty five pounds with assistance as needed; have adequate balance to stabilize self and client during treatment static/dynamic; work at a fast pace; get up and down from the floor; sit on a chair or stool, manipulate tools for mechanical tasks.

The employee occasionally is required to squat, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb step stool; reach overhead; lift up to 50 pounds; perform proper body mechanics for a two person lift.

The employee will need the ability to drive a motor vehicle frequently.

THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES
 

Holidays:
12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year.
 

Vacation:
10 working days a year during the first three years of service; 15 working days a year - 4 through 9 years of service; 17 working days a year - 10 through 15 years of service; 20 working days a year - 16 or more years of service. Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment. For purposes of vacation accrual, a working day is no more than 8 hours.
 

Sick Leave:
96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual. Employees terminating in good standing after completion of 5 years of continuous service will receive a pro-rata payoff of accumulated sick leave. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement. Note - accrued sick leave may not be used until after three months of employment. Accrued paid leave benefits are used in conjunction with FMLA/CFRA as appropriate.
 

Bereavement:
Maximum of 24 hours for each non-concurrent death in the immediate family.
 

Health Plan:
Shasta County contracts with PERS for medical insurance and has an alternative Blue Cross plan. Employees in the Teamsters bargaing unit are insured through a Teamsters Trust plan. Depending on the plan selected, the County pays most, or all, of the employee premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent premium. Contributions are made for a portion of a retiree's insurance premium.
 

Dental Plan:
The County pays a portion of the employee's and dependents' premium for dental insurance. The employee pays the full premium during the first six months of coverage.
 

Vision Plan:
The County pays the employee premium and employees may enroll dependents at their own expense.
 

Life Insurance:
The County pays the premium for life insurance for most employees. The amount of coverage varies by bargaining unit.
 

Retirement:

The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security (note - not all Safety members' benefits are coordinated with Social Security). Members hired prior to May 8, 2011 are covered under the Safety retirement provisions with a 2% @ 55 benefit. Members hired after May 8, 2011 but before January 1, 2013 are covered under the Safety retirement provisions with a 2% @ 60 benefit. Members hired after January 1, 2013 are covered under the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) with a benefit formula of 2% @ 62. Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.


Employees pay 7% of his or her salary, on a pre-tax basis  for a period of time as specified in his or her labor contact, or Personnel Rules as appropriate.
 

Miscellaneous:

• Deferred Compensation plans available through specified companies.

• IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.

• Optional insurance products available through Colonial Life.
