General Statement of Duties

Adaptive Recreation Services provides year-round, community-based recreational, social, and education programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities. People receiving services and participating in programs have varied needs due to physical or developmental disabilities, drug or alcohol recovery, mental and/or emotional health issues.

Program instructors are responsible for developing and leading activity-based programs based upon current recommended practices in the therapeutic recreation field; supervises volunteers and networks with related agencies, home providers, and family members.

Employment Site(s): Hilyard Community Center.
Hours: Approximately 2-19 hours/week. Schedule may include weekends and evenings. Seasonally - potential up to 35-40 hours/week. 

Salary: $10.25 - $19.64/ Hourly

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

Develops course outline and objectives for program.

Keeps accurate records and processes necessary forms and reports.

Attends orientation meetings, reviews, and trainings as required.

Purchases appropriate supplies; coordinates expenditures and maintains records and receipts.

Assists with training volunteers.

Sets up room with equipment and supplies; performs necessary clean-up.

Adheres to scheduled work hours.

Monitors adapted equipment; reports problems to Recreation staff.

Works cooperatively with staff, participants, parents, home providers, and related agencies.

Some positions may be required to drive 15-passenger bus or van equipped with wheelchair lifts. In addition, due to federal regulations related to door-to-door transport service some positions may require additional training and/or alcohol and drug testing.

Follows procedures and policies as set by the City.

Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
The principles of therapeutic recreation including philosophy of community recreation and inclusion.

The nature and etiology of physical, mental, and/or emotional disabilities and their potential impact upon an individual's ability to engage in recreational activities.

Skill in:
Assessing the recreational interests and needs of people with disabilities.

Teaching and conducting modified recreational classes and activities creating an environment that is inclusive and supportive to all participants.

Adapting activities and equipment to meet the needs of people with various disabilities.

Ability to:
Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Work in cooperation with staff and the public.

Identify hazards, implement solutions, and maintain a safe and orderly environment for program participants.

Work with minimal supervision.

Work within the policies and guidelines set by the City.
Minimum Requirements
Experience and/or training in therapeutic recreation and/or experience with people with disabilities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

License / Certificate
Some positions may require a valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire. Applicant must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

Current First Aid, CPR and Food Handlers certificates or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Must be 18 years or older.
 
Must pass criminal background check.

Selection Process
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be notified within two-three weeks after the posting deadline.
