General Statement of Duties

The City of Eugene Library, Recreation, & Cultural Services Department's Aquatic's Program provides accessible municipal aquatic environments. Aquatics program staff are responsible for maintaining safe practices and conditions in this environment, including supervision of aquatic activities and the participants involved.

The following positions will be filled from this job posting:

  • Lifeguard: $10.25 - $11.79 Hour
  • Swim Lesson Instructor: $10.25 - $14.70/Hour
  • Fitness Aquatics Instructor: $10.25 - $19.64/Hour
  • Additional steps above maximum range may be given for Instructor II and III positions based on experience and skills.
 
Employment Site(s):
  • Echo Hollow Pool: 1655 Echo Hollow Road; open year-round
  • Sheldon Pool: 2443 Willakenzie Road; open year round
  • Amazon Pool: 2600 Hilyard; open May - October
 
Hours: Approximately 6-15 hours/week with additional hours available during high use/summer months. Schedule may include weekends and evenings.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

Responsible for the safety and welfare of the patrons under the direction of the pool manager.

Supervises the pool during public swimming hours.

Cautions and educates swimmers about dangerous situations.

Completes reports as needed and assigned by the pool manager.

Carries out First Aid or emergency procedures as directed.

Performs front desk duties.

Teaches learn-to-swim lessons or fitness classes.

Communicates with the public in a clear and positive manner.

Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
Emergency and First Aid policies and procedures.

Water rescue procedures.

Ability to:
Demonstrate personal swimming capabilities.

Demonstrate water rescue procedures.

React quickly and responsibly to distress or rescue situations.

Maintain safe order and conditions for all participants.

Keep accurate records as needed.

Adhere to scheduled work hours.

Work within City, State, and Federal guidelines.

Communicate with the public in a courteous and knowledgeable manner.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Experience and Training
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.

License and/or Certificate
Lifeguard:
American Red Cross Lifeguard certified prior to employment.
Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPRPR)
Prevention of Disease Transmission certificates, required; AED and 02, recommended

Swim Lesson Instructor:
Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.

Fitness Aquatics Instructor:
Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
Nationally recognized fitness certification desired.
SWFA, AEA, National Arthritis Foundation desired

Head Lifeguard positions are filled internally as needed
American Red Cross Lifeguard
Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
AED and 02.
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification; Lifeguard Management recommended.

Selection Process

Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be notified within two-three weeks after the posting deadline.

Salary and Benefits
