Position Purpose/Summary

APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules.

Responsible for the application of journeyman skills and knowledge in repairing and maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and tools. Work is performed under supervision in accordance with standard trade practices adapted to specialized departmental requirements and standards. Work assignments are ordinarily oral and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints with inspection during process and upon completion. No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions

  • Overhauls, repairs, reproduces unavailable parts, tests, and maintains in effective readiness, motors, ignition systems, transmissions, rear ends, steering and braking mechanisms, chassis, and bodies of specialized fire apparatus, such as aerial ladder trucks, pumpers, and rescue trucks, as well as standard passenger cars and maintenance trucks.
  • Fuels and maintains operating condition of firefighting apparatus and equipment, including pumps, engines, lighting plants, and oxygen equipment. Procures special equipment.
  • Repairs, tests, maintains, and installs firefighting equipment, such as pumps, ground, deck, deluge guns, gas masks, inhalators, resuscitators, extinguishers, smoke ejectors, lighting plants, salvage and roof covers, outboard motorboats, life nets, lines, and guns.
  • Repairs, tests, and maintains a variety of fire ladders, such as extension, straight wall, roof, and manually and hydraulically operated aerial ladders, as well as fire hoses and fittings.
  • Repairs, and maintains firefighting tools, such as standard and specialized axes, saws, picks, sledges, cutters, crowbars, hooks, and jimmies.
  • Operates, repairs, and maintains machine shop equipment, such as lathe, drill press, power saw, grinder, expander, and welding machinery.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and tools used in repairing and maintaining both standard motor vehicles and specialized fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions in both standard motor vehicles and specialized firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools employed in all phases of the work.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by technical courses relating to the trade.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including experience in repairing heavy-duty automotive equipment.
