Position Purpose/Summary

APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules.

Responsible for routine work in the safe and efficient operation of a fully automated collection vehicle. Work involves the responsibility for the collection of roll out containers from tree belt areas and the transportation of the refuse to the Resource Recovery Plant at Bondi's Island or other designated disposal site. Work involves a considerable amount of stop and go driving. Work is performed under general supervision. No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions

  • Operates the fully automated collection vehicle.
  • Collects refuse from properly placed roll out carts in the tree belt area. Exits vehicle to properly position carts as necessary.
  • Loads refuse from container into truck by use of an automated arm.
  • Transports loaded vehicle to the Resource Recovery Plant at Bondi's Island.
  • Assists other drivers as necessary in order to maintain collection schedules.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance; checks to make sure truck is operating properly and safely and cleans, greases and washes truck daily or as required.
  • Fills out daily drive sheet and submits to office as required.
  • Issues warning/violation notices or information along routes to repeat ordinance violators.
  • Maintains simple daily activity records.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to operate automated collection vehicle in a safe efficient manner.
  • Ability to deal with residents in a professional manner in order to resolve problems or answer questions regarding work performed.
  • Ability to perform task of loading and operating vehicle requiring considerable agility.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to follow routing and to prepare daily written report of work performed and problems encountered.
  • Working knowledge of defensive driving theory and traffic laws, ordinances and rules and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in operating and loading the vehicle.
  • Knowledge of the operations, care, and minor maintenance to the automated collection vehicle.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in following established routes for collection purposes desirable.
